Beyonce has spent most of the year on the road in support of her I Am…Sasha Fierce album. In the UK the album has sold over 900,000 copies and the accompanying tour has taken Beyonce to every corner of the world. In time for Christmas, and to celebrate the success of the tour, Beyonce releases I Am…Yours: An Intimate Performance At Wynn Las Vegas.
I Am…Yours captures a performance from the tour’s smallest venue, the 1,500 seat Encore Theater in Vegas. To adjust to the intimate surroundings Beyonce reworked her set and performed a large portion of it acoustically. She also added in songs that she hasn’t performed live before such as Resentment from her second album B’Day and That’s Why You’re Beautiful from her current album. Over the course of the performance Beyonce highlights every aspect of her career so far and puts on a truly stunning show.
Opening with Hello, Beyonce walks into the theatre greeting fans as she sings the song before taking her place on the stage. The first half of the set is stripped-back and showcases Beyonce’s phenomenal vocals. A spine-tingling rendition of Sweet Dreams mixed with Dangerously In Love is an early highlight. The former sounds fantastic acoustic and the latter has become a highlight of every Beyonce concert. Her voice is strong, pure and versatile, and she sounds simply fantastic. Her voice remains strong on renditions of hits such as If I Were A Boy, Halo and Irreplaceable.
Mid-way through the set Beyonce shares the story of her rise to success with the audience. Performing The Jackson 5’s I Wanna Be Where You Are (a song she sang at an audition aged 9) and subsequently recounting the history of Destiny’s Child through a medley of their hits (No No No, Say My Name, Independent Women Pt. 1 and Survivor to name a few), Beyonce is engaging, funny and always the professional performer. She’s so good you can even forgive the sections where she mimes some of the group’s classics.
The third part of the set refocuses on Beyonce’s solo work kicking off with the Austin Powers 3 track Work It Out. Telling the story of falling in love she launches into ’03 Bonnie and Clyde before the triple whammy of Crazy In Love, Naughty Girl and Get Me Bodied. Of course the best is saved for last with an incredible performance of Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).
The accompanying 2 CDs feature the full audio from the concert and allow you to enjoy the concert on the move or as background music. It’s nice to have the option between the audio and the full-on show making this package a must-have for all Beyonce fans.
I Am…Yours is a fantastic release from Beyonce. Released just after she’s been named the World’s Greatest Popstar by 4Music, it’s sure to sell very well in the lead-up to Christmas. Beyonce is one of the world’s greatest performers and she showcases why here. Equally comfortable with an acoustic setting as she is surrounded by dancers and a full band, Beyonce is a world-class artist. Few can perform live with as much energy and enthusiasm as Beyonce and she will go down as a legend in musical history.
