Hailing your own band to be without comparison is a bold move for any artist, however established, and clearly one that Southend-on-Sea newcomers Velvet Morning (not to be confused with London based indie outfit Some Velvet Morning) are not afraid to make.
Reveling in the recent revival of the genre, and openly attempting to forge their  own genre defying identity, the four piece’s sound is heavy with psychedelic edge, marking their approach with understated fanfare, dark undertones of moody tranquillity and artistic flourish. Describing their output as smooth psychedelia, fans of Temples and even Radiohead will be drawn to the trippy vibe and vocals so chilled they’re practically horizontal.
Velvet Moon opens with an ever so slightly eerie offering of Clouds Come First before drifting into atmospheric standout track Blue Jean Baby. The tone throughout the EP remains at an enjoyably drowsy pace barely altering its course, and at times dangerously brushing hands with all out sedation. You Can’t Download Food is another impressive creation, gliding with a laidback attitude that could have come straight out of the era from which the musical style takes substantial inspiration. The listener is gently lulled into taking hazy pleasure from this psychedelic trip full of sentiment.
Whilst the jury may still be out over whether or not the band have succeeded in their quest to generate wholly original and unrivalled material, Velvet Moon undoubtedly demonstrates a musical capability that sets them apart from their peers, that will be sure to draw a certain level of appreciation from even the most avid of psychedelia fanatics.
