The Music Of Nashville Original Soundtrack (Season 4 Vol. 1) album review

Nashvilleā€™s fourth season is well underway in the US but thereā€™s no premiere date set for the country music drama here in the UK yet. For its third season the show jumped from More4 to E4 and weā€™ve got everything crossed it will start airing before the current season finishes in the US. Despite the lack of being able to watch the show here in the UK, the latest volume of its soundtrack has been released featuring songs from the first half of season 4.

The soundtrack opens with Charles Estenā€™s Like New, a country-rock moment that is fairly different to his usual laidback acoustic contributions. Embracing change seems to be a theme on this soundtrack release with Aubrey Peeples contributing the emotive Too Far From You, a marked difference from the polished sheen of previous tracks sheā€™s recorded for the show. Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen are back together recording punchy country gems as showcased on the fantastic Plenty Far to Fall. Each actor has a solo song on the album too with Clare Bowenā€™s Speak to Me being the standout of the two.

Riley Smith, who plays new character Markus Keen shines on In the Name of Your Love and duets with Connie Britton on the traditional country vibe of I Want To (Do Everything For You). Lennon and Maisy Stella almost steal the show on the gorgeous Rockinā€™ & Rollinā€™, which is nestled towards the end of the record.

As you may have read in the press, Hayden Panettiere took a break from the show to deal with post-partum depression in an eerie case of life imitating art. That sadly means that she only has two tracks on this soundtrack release. I can take or leave her rendition of Pasty Clineā€™s Crazy with Steven Tyler but her solo contribution What If Itā€™s You is the best track on the album. Season 3 saw Panettiereā€™s character Juliette embracing a more adult sound and that continues with this track. Itā€™s a real corker and can be added to the list of great songs Panettiere has recorded for the show.

The Music Of Nashville Original Soundtrack Season 4 Vol. 1 isnā€™t the strongest release from the show to date but thereā€™s plenty to enjoy as always. The lack of Hayden Panettiere is definitely felt here, and to be honest Iā€™d be happy for her character to get solo album releases as she often gets the best songs. Still the album is enough to get excited about the UK arrival of season 4 (whenever that may be!) and perhaps seeing the songs in context will make them resonate that bit more.
