2017 has been quite the year for Dylan Scott. The breakout star scored his first number one with My Girl and released a Deluxe Edition of his Top 5 self-titled debut album. He’s currently shooting up the charts with new single Hooked but somehow he’s found time to spread a little festive cheer with new EP Merry Christmas.

The 5 track EP sees Scott tackling well-known festive favourites and as it’s now November, I feel it’s absolutely fine to have it on at full volume. Things get off to a perky start with the infectious Winter Wonderland. Elaborate orchestration opens the track before Scott gets the chance to show off a smoother side to his vocals. Much like Brett Eldredge did with 2016’s fantastic Glow, Scott is out to prove that he’s vocally more versatile than you may think based off hearing his debut album.

The tempo remains upbeat on the fantastic Jingle Bell Rock. You can almost see the smile on Scott’s face as his warm vocal blasts out of the speakers. It’s one of the finest moments on the EP and it’s definitely been added to my festive playlist ahead of the holiday season.

For the mid-point of the EP Scott slows things down with The Christmas Song and White Christmas. I feel like I’m hearing Scott’s voice very differently on these two tracks. On The Christmas Song Scott utilises a lower more hushed tone unleashing his impressive vibrato on the verses whereas on White Christmas he’s much more restrained enveloping your ears with his warm vocals.

Merry Christmas comes to a close with Santa Claus is Coming to Town, which picks the beat back up again. The big band feel of the song works well and Scott could easily go the way of The Rat Pack should he choose to step out from Country in the future.

With Merry Christmas, Scott has delivered a fun EP that perfectly captures the spirit of the holiday season. I’m a sucker for Christmas music and I can also be its harshest critic but there’s nothing really to fault here. My only wish (this Christmas) is that it was a full-length festive release because based on the evidence of this EP, it would be an awesome collection to anyone’s Christmas music collection.
