Our favourite Kylie b-sides

We continue our Kylie week, to celebrate the release of new album ‘Kiss Me Once’, by picking our favourite b-sides.

As part of her K25 celebrations in 2012, the lady herself acknowledged the fans love of her b-sides by playing many for the first (and last?) time on her Anti Tour.

There’s lots to choose from but we’ve tried to pick 10 of our faves across her career, starting with the latest b-side, from ‘Into The Blue’. It’s called ‘Sparks’ and reminds us a bit of The Lion King at the beginning and then the dangerously high vocals kick in.

Next up is ‘Cherry Bomb’ the b-side to ‘Wow’ back in 2008. Kylie wrote this track with Karen Poole (with whom she also wrote ‘Wow’ and more) and Bloodshy & Avant (who wrote many a pop gem including Britney’s ‘Toxic’). Here’s Kylie performing it live on the Anti Tour in 2012.

Another ‘X’ era b-side next, as we give you ‘King Or Queen’, the b-side to ‘2 Hearts’. Written by Kylie, Karen Poole and Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen/Britney/Kelly Clarkson), it’s a disco tinged track with hooks-a-plenty. Will you be my King or Queen?

‘It wasn’t always like this’ purrs Kylie sounding like a teenage girl on the opening to ‘Made Of Glass’ which saw her team up with the team behind many a Girls Aloud hit, Xenomania. It’s a great pairing and the result well lives up to expectations. It sounds nothing like Girls Aloud and not really that much like Kylie – yet she makes it her own as Louis Walsh might say. Here’s the b-side to ‘Giving You Up’.

Kylie’s 9th studio album ‘Body Language’ was rumoured to have been called ‘City Games’ a track that ended up appearing as a b-side to ‘Chocolate’. It’s a slinky R&B pop record that should’ve made it on to ‘Body Language’ as far as we’re concerned.

Another of the ‘Body Language’ era b-sides is ‘Cruise Control’ which appeared on the ‘Red Blooded Woman’ single. Very American sounding it has slightly bhangra beats and an almost cartoon quality in places. Comes complete with a Sean Paul alike rap.

‘Tightrope’ is our next pick and was the b-side to ‘In Your Eyes’ (and also a bonus track on the Australian version of ‘Fever’). It’s euphoric pop that sits nicely with ‘I Believe In You’ and ‘All The Lovers’.

Next up we’ll visit ‘Light Years’ and ‘On A Night Like This’ b-side ‘Ocean Blue’. Acoustic guitars and laid back vocals drench this heartfelt ballad. Lie back and enjoy.

For our next choice we’ve picked Prefab Sprout cover ‘If You Don’t Love Me’ which was the b-side to ‘Confide In Me’. A very stripped back piano led song which showcases Kylie’s vocals beautiful.

A change of tempo now as Kylie goes 90s rave for ‘Give Me Just A Little More Time’ b-side ‘Do You Dare’ that she wrote with SAW. Grab your glowsticks!

And finally we go back to 1990 and ‘Tears On My Pillow’ b-side ‘We Know The Meaning Of Love’. It’s classic SAW complete with a ‘never, never, neh-never,never’ bit that was so of the time.
