EF’s Underdogs: The Scruff interview

Can you tell me how long you’ve been making music for?

Collectively we’ve been together for around 3 years but that would be a lot longer if you include the time Adam and Omar spent in a band together at school. About a year ago Robby joined, having spent the majority of his musical life in bands that wear make up and spandex, we toyed with the idea of making him stand behind a curtain for the first few weeks, but he’s slowly coming round, although he has been known to still stuff his trousers with a courgette.

Who is in the band?

The band consists of Adam (Vocals/guitar), Sam (Bass guitar), Robby (Lead guitar) and Omar (Drums).

How would you describe your music?

Because of our varied musical influences I think we take elements of Britpop with a bit of blues-rock with the odd surf-riff thrown over the top for good measure. Essentially we’re big on trying to just pump out catchy melodic tunes that will stick in people’s heads whilst still being thrashy and in your face, to get the full affect you really need to come and see us play live.

Are there any new releases out?

Our new single ‘Leave it alone’ is available to download right now across all major online music retailers – You can also catch the accompanying video on Youtube – It’s rather weird/good (we promise)!

For our readers can you tell us your three favourite tracks out at the moment?

It’s hard to pick with such a wealth of good music around at the minute but we’d probably narrow it down to the following in terms of what gets the most plays in the van:
Idles – Well done
Tom Grennan – Sweet Hallelujah
DMA’s – Lay down

Can you tell me what your top three favourite music videos of all time are?

We’re really into our concept videos and try and top what we’ve done previously so you’d think we’d be able to list our favourite three rather easily but there are just too many to choose from! An obvious classic is ‘Here it goes again’ by ‘OK! Go’ (affectionately known as ‘the treadmill video) but they have a number of videos that we could list here. I think we’d go for that one though due to sheer amount of times how many people have tried to replicate it and the fact that they managed to turn four blokes goofing around on treadmills into essentially what is a piece of modern art.

Smack My Bitch Up by The Prodigy (Completely Uncensored) from Max on Vimeo.

Videos with a ‘twist’ are always well received by us lot so the classic ‘Smack my bitch up’ by Prodigy will always be a favourite. The big ‘reveal’ at the end of the video shouldn’t really be a shock in this day and age as we all know a girl who likes to get just as drunk their male counterparts but given that this dropped in 1997 it was pretty controversial at the time and we love a bit of that.

When we’re thinking about future ideas and projects it never hurts to have a Youtube spree and I know a few of the lads were particularly impressed with the Alt-J video for their track ‘Breezeblocks’ but that’s probably just because it’s a bit dark (the story plays out in reverse though so additional bonus points for quirkiness). There really are too many to choose from! (Honourable mention goes to Cabbage/Kevin – that video is pure filth!)

Where can people see you play next?

We only have a couple more shows before the end of 2016 – You can catch us at the following venues;
12/12/16 – The Craufurd Arms, Milton Keynes
14/12/16 – The Horn, St Albans

Tell me what you do for fun when you aren’t playing music?

We can’t really go into too much detail about our extra curricular activities on such a nice site as this, but we have a good time! Adam enjoys spelling his name in alphebetti spagetti as a general pass time, Omar and Sam enjoy meeting up at the weekends to race those foam planes from the 90s that you have to put together, and Robby is probably getting his spandex wearing in while he’s not with us!
