Seth Ennis, Royal Albert Hall, London live review

Georgia-born singer-songwriter Seth Ennis has been building a name for himself as a writer in Nashville before releasing his EP Mabelle at the end of 2016. Following his appearance at C2C: Country to Country earlier this year, Seth returned to the UK last month supporting Little Big Town on their latest tour.

Seth kicked off his performance with Buzz. It’s an uptempo number with lots of twang and really suited the poppier tones in his voice, as well as allowing him to show off his skills as a guitar player. His excitement and enthusiasm for playing at the Royal Albert Hall was clear and he continually encouraged the audience to clap along, which they willingly did. He then moved into current single Fast Girl, which showed his more soulful side through its laid-back melody and smooth vocal.

Throughout the set Seth maintained a good balance between more upbeat songs such as the fun yet romantic Look At You and slower numbers like the piano-led Think And Drive and moving new song Call Your Mama. However, for me the standout was his performance of Our Town, a song Seth wrote which was originally recorded by Tyler Farr. Standing alone on stage with his acoustic guitar, Seth spoke very movingly about seeing Tyler perform the song at last year’s Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas and reflecting on in light of the weekend’s tragic events before he began the song. The balance of the gentle melody with poignant lyrics had the audience absolutely spellbound, and Seth particularly impressed by delivering a huge note on the bridge.

Seth finished the performance with his debut single, Woke Up In Nashville, which he wrote about his experience of moving to Music City. The song perfectly summed up his ability as a songwriter and storyteller, building up the imagery throughout, and showcased the tone in his voice and his versatility as a musician really well. It was clear he’s grown in confidence since his C2C appearance and the crowd rewarded him by giving him a standing ovation with thunderous applause.

About halfway through his set, Seth asked the audience how many of them hadn’t heard of him before the show, and about half of them raised their hands. From the reaction to his performance, it’s safe to say he’s won over a legion of new fans. I’m looking forward to hearing more new music from him and hope he comes back to the UK soon!
