Lucie Silvas Islington Assembly Hall London live review

Nashville-based British singer-songwriter Lucie Silvas has been making pretty regular trips over to the UK in 2017. In March she was here for C2C: Country to Country, where she performed multiple sets including an acoustic performance on the Yamaha Music Stage. She followed that in July with a headline performance at Nashville Meets London, where she wowed the packed audience. As she prepares to release new music in 2018, Silvas was back in town for a headline tour with Charlie Worsham in tow.

Silvasā€™ performance last night was a chance for fans to hear some of her new material for the first time. She opened the set with a double whammy of new tracks ā€“ First Rate Heartbreak and Kite ā€“ and they went down very well. The stronger of the two is First Rate Heartbreak, which is an uptempo number that perfectly marries Silvasā€™ soulful voice with a stomping beat. It was a great start to the set and a brave move to open with new material.

New songs were spread throughout the set alongside selections from all three of Silvasā€™ studio albums. The stirring Smoke, from Letters to Ghosts, was an early highlight in the set along with What Youā€™re Made Of, the first single from Silvasā€™ breakthrough debut album Breathe In. Both songs really showcase that big voice that Silvas has and she sounded absolutely superb.

Other new tracks during the set included the title track of Silvasā€™ forthcoming album E.G.O. (Everybody Gets Off), which was a catchy and funky number, and Smoking Your Weed, which builds over an old-school soul melody. The new material sounds really promising and Iā€™m looking forward to hearing the full album when it arrives next year.

Towards the end of the set, Silvas did a cover of Smokey Robinsonā€™s Whoā€™s Lovinā€™ You. Her voice sounded phenomenal on the track. She has so much power and a remarkable range, and I got goosebumps just listening to her soaring up the scales.

Other highlights of the set included a rousing rendition of Breathe In featuring Charlie Worsham on Mandolin, the gorgeous My Old Habits and the infectious sing-a-long moment Letters to Ghosts. Silvas brought the set to a close with the beautiful ballad Pull the Stars Down.

It may have been the third time Iā€™ve seen Silvas this year but I still get blown away by her incredible talent. As a songwriter she can write any style of music and as a singer she could sing the phone book and Iā€™d want to be in the audience listening. Last nightā€™s show was a real treat and Silvas sounded absolutely amazing throughout. Iā€™m pretty sure most people left the show wishing they could buy her forthcoming album there and then. I know I did!
