Charlie Worsham Islington Assembly Hall London live review

Singer-songwriter Charlie Worsham has a passionate fanbase here in the UK. Since visiting for C2C: Country to Country in 2016, Worsham has made a point of coming back as often as he can. Thatā€™s resulted in him building quite the fanbase and heā€™s easily one of the most-buzzed about artists in Country music right now. Following a couple of intimate shows recently, Worsham is back on the road as the support for Lucie Silvas on her UK and Ireland tour.

Earlier this year Worsham released his eagerly awaited second album Beginning of Things and his show last night mostly featured songs from that record. Backed by a band, for the first time in the UK, Worsham was armed with both electro-acoustic and electric guitars for his performance. The set opened with the catchy Please People Please, a song that has a strong rhythm and an uptempo beat that you canā€™t help but tap your foot along to. The song perfectly showcases everything that Worsham has to offer ā€“ his clever and honest lyrics, his impressive vocals and his incredible guitar playing.

Throughout the set Worsham engaged with the crowd and expressed his gratitude when he got rapturous applause following every song. Whether he was dipping into old material such as Young to See or playing newer songs like the hilarious Take Me Drunk Iā€™m Home, he had the audience mesmerised and singing every single word. At one point he changed a song in the set list after the audience started shouting out for Mississippi in July. He admitted that was had planned Old Times Sake but he switched it out in favour of the audienceā€™s suggestion.

The thing you notice about Worsham instantly is his passion for music. You can see every fibre of his being lighting up as he performs and heā€™s quite magnificent to watch. He also makes it look effortless, which is a credit to the remarkable natural talent he has.

Elsewhere in the set the atmospheric and soulful Call You Up was a definite highlight and Lawn Chair Donā€™t Care showcased Worshamā€™s more traditional Country influences. The set came to a close with Southern By the Grace of God, one of the best tracks on Beginning of Things. It was the perfect end to a very well-received set that further cemented Worshamā€™s burgeoning UK fanbase.

When it came time for Worsham to leave the stage, the audience was noticeably eager for him to carry on. Itā€™s never an easy task to open for someone elseā€™s show but there was as much passion for Worsham last night as there was for headline act Lucie Silvas. He has such a warm and charismatic way about him, and itā€™s a joy to soak up his talent. I doubt itā€™ll be long before heā€™s back for his own headline tour once again.
