Ward Thomas – St Pancras Renaissance Hotel live review

The last time we saw Ward Thomas was at their gig in The Islington, where we felt as if they played a really great set. They showed us what they are capable of and how good they were live and we love seeing ladies with guitars! We felt as if they could’ve gone and pushed themselves that tiny bit more, to be truly fantastic and we have to say that they certainly turned their set up a few notches last night, to put on a splendid gig at The St.Pancras Renaissance Hotel. The gothic and awe-inspiring architecture of the St.Pancras Renaissance Hotel is magnificent and steeped in grand history. Walking in to the building makes for a wonderful experience. Lest we forget that this is also the place where the Spice Girls filmed Wannabe (we might even have done a little rendition on the way out, when nobody was looking!). The overall setting and feel only added to the whole atmosphere and the Ward Thomas sisters really gave their all to the performance.

We feel like it is absolutely fantastic that such young and British talent are paving the way and leading us out on a country vibe. Perhaps this could be the start of something special and more young acts will follow suit in to the mainstream, so that we don’t have to rely on the talent of American country artists visiting the UK to give us our slice of country! We really couldn’t fault their performance and these are ladies who are just going to continue to grow and keep getting better and better. We thoroughly enjoyed every song that they did and they had everyone in the room captivated by their great vocals, enthusiasm and overall natural talent. There are no gimmicks here, no need for fancy costume changes or dancers, just two talented sisters who love making great music and they are a joyful presence to watch.

The stand out songs and ones which we most enjoyed in the set was the full of great attitude and foot stomping Town Called Ugley and the beautiful Cartwheels, which showed off their diverse range and full vocal ability. Nearing the end of their set, one member in the audience said to us it was as if Dolly Parton had been spilt in to two – very high praise indeed! It was a great coincidence by what was to follow, with the final song of the night seeing them singing a cover of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5, which was wonderful. We’re going to be keeping very close eyes on these ladies and we look forward to seeing them developing and maturing in years to come.

I am passionate about everything any anything that involves music, theatre and the arts! I love interviewing artists and getting to learn more about them. When I’m not doing artsy things, you may find me watching rugby, singing with my choir and travelling to a new part of the world. Carpe diem.
