The Graphite Set – These Streets EP review

Lily Buchanan aka The Graphite Set is a psych folk artist with rock and roll influences. The artist’s new EP, These Streets was recorded in a studio Limehouse but Buchanan herself grew up in Scotland. The EP features guest guitar from Katherine Blamire of The Smoke Fairies. We had a listen and here are our thoughts.

The EP kicks off with the title track. First you hear a distant guitar and before long the track bursts into a big sound before it slows down again. Buchanan’s vocals are quite articulate and distinct. These Streets has a sense of urgency about it and you’re almost compelled to listen to it as it becomes more dramatic and demented.

Pick Me Up starts with a drumbeat and the soon the vocals come in and give the track some character. The song isn’t as edgy as These Streets but it is still dramatic. Unfortunately Pick Me Up sounds a bit generic and like the kind of music we’d hear at a festival and enjoy but then forget about instantly.

The EP has a softer side too, which is reflected through the ballad In Your Eyes. This mellow song almost serves as an interlude yet it shines on the EP with its simplicity.

Last on the EP is I See No Lies an upbeat track and appropriate finish.

The EP doesn’t really work for us, some of the tracks sound a little dated and generic. There are some interesting quirks here and there but not enough to make a difference. These Streets EP is slightly disappointing however we can see what The Graphite Set is trying to do and there is definitely something interesting there.
