Secret Garden Party 2014 Friday review

Secret Garden Party takes place in a magical setting every summer in the quiet town of Huntingdon. Anyone who’s been will tell you of its beauty and breathtaking art installations. Originally Secret Garden Party started of as a birthday party but now the secret is out and for one brief weekend in July every year hardcore partygoers can let their wildest party dreams come true!

Our magical journey began on Thursday alongside most of the campers who decided to get there early. The gardeners were smiling and even the long queues couldn’t get anyone down as the sun was shining on the lake and its surroundings. At the center of the stage sat its centerpiece: Emerald city, shining brightly green. Around the lake the trees were decorated with hanging people or random art installations that were both curious and enchanting.

Thursday is when the party starts but only a mild one, even so people seemed to really go for it and let the festival take over. We decided to take a wonder and see what was new and what didn’t change. Over by Where The Wild Things Are we enjoyed an eighties inspired set by the band called Movie and the crowd seemed to agree that it was a lot of fun. We ventured into the dance area by The Temple of Boom and The Drop where we spent the rest of our evening meeting new people and making friends.

Friday was another scorcher and for those with sense in them it was the perfect opportunity to take a dip into the lake, other decided to cool down under the shade and so did we. Sitting on the hill by The Great Stage we spent the greatest part of our day listening to the bands on that day. Big Deal was alright but it was Kwabs that really took our breath away on Friday. With his velvet voice and mellow set the music felt perfect on this hot summers day.  The Great Stage was packed with great acts on Friday and next we saw Kyla Grange who was interesting as a young pop sensation. MO seemed to attract the crowds with her mix of dance, pop and r&b. The Danish artist had so much energy on stage it was hard not feel compelled to watch her.  Deap Vally also surprised us with their big riffs and powerful set. It’s hard to deny how awesome this duo is.

Other Friday daytime fun included a stop by the science area of the festival where you were able to pet a tarantula or a chameleon or even a python. If the real world doesn’t cut it for you and you fancy yourself a bit of fantasy fun then The Village Hall would have had plenty of fun for you, Friday we went to various weddings there and even a few baptisms. People certainly seemed to be making an effort in the dress code department with men wearing tuxedos and women were wearing their prettiest and shiniest dresses.

Little Dragon were Friday night’s headliner and the Great Stage was completely packed. The band did a great job at entertaining the audience with a set packed with their biggest hits such as Ritual Union and Twice. The light show also seemed to have the desired effect with everyone almost being hypnotized by all the pretty lights.

Little Dragon closed the main stage however the party had only just begun! It’s impossible to try and control SGP instead you should let the festival guide you through its beautiful landscapes. This year we even managed to find the secret stage called The Labyrinth and there we partied with pixies and other creatures of the night. We went back to the Temple of Boom for Gorgon City’s set which seemed to entertain the huge dance arena.

The night ended as it always does with a quick stop in the Artful Badger Woods.

Thursday and Friday were indeed wonderful days filled with happy memories.

Saturday we’ll be filled with more incredible music from the likes of Public Enemy, Gramatik and Wolf Alice there will also be surprise sets and much more so stay tuned.
