Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell – Blurred Lines single review

Success in the UK hasn’t been forthcoming for Robin Thicke for a reason we haven’t yet been able to fathom. He enjoyed a breakthrough with Lost Without U in 2007 which peaked at number 11 whilst the parent album The Evolution of Robin Thicke peaked at number 30. Since then it’s been very quiet on the Robin Thicke front from a UK perspective. That looks set to change finally with the release of new single Blurred Lines.

As we write this review Blurred Lines is sitting pretty at the top of the UK iTunes chart. The song has already hit number 1 in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and New Zealand, and has peaked at 12 in the US. The controversial video for the track, which has been removed from YouTube for containing nudity, is in part responsible for the hype around the song but nobody can deny what a smart track it is. The uptempo beat is so infectious that you sing along almost instinctively and get swept along with the party vibe of the track. Thicke’s soulful vocal is seductive as he sings about his admiration for women before T.I. and Pharrell kick-in with cheeky raps and ad-libs.

If you have seen the video for the track, you can’t help but want to prance around in a silly way in time to the song. Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell of course look incredibly smart and sophisticated when they do it whilst we’re sure we look pretty ridiculous. Blurred Lines is one of the strongest singles Thicke has released and we’re glad he’s finally getting recognised in the UK. He’ll be supporting Maroon 5 in early 2014 on their UK tour but we hope he puts in some solo shows before then. We’ve said for years that Robin Thicke is a serious talent. It seems the rest of the world are finally catching up.
