Rachel Sermanni – Black Currents EP review

After months of anticipation, Rachel Sermanni, one of Scotland’s finest new talents, finally unleashes her debut EP Black Currents. EF can confirm that it’s been well worth the wait.

From the get-go, the standard of this EP is firmly set. The slow plod of the opening double bass notes in Breathe Easy lull listeners into believing that we are in for a relaxing ride, but don’t let those softly strummed strings fool you. For this songstress possesses the promising skill of luring you in with her smoky soft voice one minute before throwing humorously spiky exclamations in your direction the next.

Black Currents proudly showcases songs based on a brave a cappella backbone, and fleshed out with a forthright of strings and keys section. This presents the perfect platform to highlight the stunning rawness of Sermanni’s voice, which brings a subtle fragility and warmth that overrides the otherwise aggressively fierce instrumentals.

It would be so easy to compare this newcomer, with her haunting vocals akin to Laura Marling, and the Patrick Wolf style dramatic element, which is ever present in her music, but Sermanni’s form is truly in a league of its own. She would give any artist brought straight out into the world of celebrity by the Brit school factory a damn good run for their money. The pure passion Sermanni has for her music is wholly apparent and the belief in the words she expresses will surely find a fan in you.

Black Currents allows the talented singer-songwriter to demonstrate a maturity well beyond her 19 years, expressed through thoughtful lyrics. Her vocals grip you from the get go and hold you to the finish.

Judging by this enchanting folk infused EP; Rachel Sermanni is a force to be reckoned with.
