Laura Welsh – Soft Control album review

When Laura Welsh moved to London to launch her music career, she went through the crumbling of her then band that she was the lead singer of – Laura & the Tears and her long-term relationship ended. As with most artists, from heartbreak and difficult times comes the most raw work and the most honest work. We’re pleased that Laura’s struggles turned into creativity and set her on a path of turning those situations in to a great body of work. The result is what we can hear on her album, titled Soft Control.

We believe that Laura Welsh has the talent to rival some of the biggest names in the British music industry. Having supported the likes of Ellie Goulding and London Grammar, we feel as though it is only a matter of time before everyone picks up on her songs and great voice. Having collaborated with several high profile songwriters on the album, the result shown throughout this album is of brilliant songs, one after another. When we played the album for the very first time, we thought just wow, what a voice.

When you listen to the control of her voice which is piercing, floating and powerful, you instantly fall in love with it. We instantly have a vision of a Florence and the Machine-esque powerhouse vocal and an artist moving gracefully across the stage. Soft Control, followed by Ghosts to open the album are two stunning songs to raise the bar of the album and really set the tone of what is to follow. Break The Fall has a pulsating beat that runs throughout and Laura’s souring vocals takes the track to new heights, it sounds instantly familiar and is instantly likeable, with thought provoking lyrics.

There is a surprise guest on the album, in the shape of John Legend, who appears on Hardest Part, which is a strong song and such an interesting and gorgeous track. What we love the most about this album, is that each song is so greatly written. It’s so refreshing to hear raw talent like this and that each song is consistently great throughout.

We urge you to give the album a whirl. When something like this comes along that is so different to the songs out there at the moment, you just want to say ‘yes’. An album like this rarely comes along where is makes you stop what you’re doing and just want to listen to track after track and absorb them completely.
