Johnny Partridge – Dames, Dudes + Cowboys Too album review

Actor and musical star Johnny Partridge is proving to be a bit of a jack of all trades. After cementing himself as a household name on EastEnders, Partridge has returned to the theatre where he earned his stripes in his earlier years. More recently heā€™s been on our screens competing on BBC Oneā€™s recent gymnastics show Tumble. Now Johnny has released his debut album Dames, Dudes + Cowboys Too.

Dames, Dudes + Cowboys Too sees Johnny mixing original tracks and covers. Being honest we did roll our eyes a little bit at the thought of another soap star trying to crack the music industry but actually Johnny is something a little bit different. The selections heā€™s picked for the album arenā€™t your usual mainstream standards instead exploring a variety of genres and showcasing what Johnnyā€™s voice can do.

Of the covers Johnny has tackled Rufus Wainwrightā€™s Me and Liza, Dolly Partonā€™s Jolene and Civil Warsā€™ Barton Hollow. Album opener The Next Right Thing, a cover of folk artist Seth Glickā€™s track, grabs your attention with Johnnyā€™s powerful vocals and will ensure you stick with the album to see what else he has to offer.

The original tracks on the album arenā€™t quite as strong as the covers with the exception of one. Stop For A Minute is an emotive piano ballad about Johnnyā€™s motherā€™s battle with Alzheimerā€™s. Johnny utilises his voice in a more restrained way and the song is one of the standouts on the album.

The album comes to a close with hidden bonus track Big Love which is Johnnyā€™s take on the Fleetwood Mac classic of the same name. His voice booms through the melody and ends the album on a high.

Dames, Dudes + Cowboys Too is a surprising record that succeeds on the strength of Johnnyā€™s voice. He can really sing and he possesses a voice thatā€™s capable of tackling a variety of genres. We can see why heā€™s enjoyed such a successful career on stage and we look forward to his next musical endeavour.
