Madam Secretary 3×18 Good Bones preview

On the latest episode of Madam Secretary, a computer sting uncovered the possible mole in the CIA arms smuggling ring.

At the start of the episode, Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) was summoned to the White House for an urgent update on the smuggling ring. President Dalton (Keith Carradine) had given the order to bring down a plane carrying weapons. Elizabeth urged him to change his mind, worried that doing so would destroy their chances of catching the mole. Dalton decided to listen and called off the operation.

Instead they executed a plan with the help of Captain Ronnie Baker (Justine Lupe). She set up a computer sting to catch the mole. It worked and they identified a staff member called Barry Milken (Michael Mulheren) as the culprit. He was apprehended and brought in for questioning.

Elizabeth went against protocol to question him herself after the CIA interrogation team failed to break him. Using her extensive experience she tried a softer tactic with him and it worked. He began to open up to her until the conversation was stopped by Milken’s lawyer, Jim Fox (Enrico Colantoni).

Fox later turned up at Elizabeth’s house to offer a plea bargain for Milken. He tried to convince her that she couldn’t afford for news of a mole to get out. Elizabeth refused and demanded Fox leave.

Elizabeth met with the Attorney General who though they should go for the plea deal. Milken later took the deal and was released. Before giving up any information he was assassinated.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth’s team were trying to do something about the poaching of black rhino in Namibia. The current efforts weren’t doing enough to prevent the extinction of the species. The team were tasked with finding a new approach.

A staff member called Gwen White (Carmen M. Herlihy) came up with an idea. Vietnam had the greatest demand for the black rhino horns as the people there believed it was a cure for impotence. She proposed an education program coupled with a supply of Viagra to reduce the demand for the horns.

They put together a presentation for the president of Vietnam but he was against a public campaign despite the offer of Henry Winkler to help. A calculation worked out that they needed something in place or the black rhino would be extinct within 3-6 months.

To get a solution to the black rhino problem Elizabeth eventually decided to go over the head of the defense secretary, Gordon Becker (Mike Pniewski). Elizabeth went to Dalton who agreed to help. Becker was not pleased.

Elsewhere in the episode, Henry (Tim Daly) struggled to get an old model engine working. He asked Jason (Evan Roe) if he wanted to help but he refused. Still Jason spent quite a lot of time looking into it himself and eventually provided the solution for why it didn’t work.

Henry got word that the cult were preparing their attack. He set up a meet with Ian Conroy (Darren Pettie) who seemed to be getting ill. Henry wondered if the cult were drugging him and took a sample from Ian for testing. It came back positive so Henry wanted to pull Ian out.

Later, Henry went to get Ian but he wasn’t at the meeting point. Henry had a look around and then got out of his car. He sensed something was wrong and then came under fire. A hail of bullets peppered Henry’s car and a couple hit him in the ankle and knee. Still he managed to get back into the car and drive away at speed.

A discussion with Elizabeth while he was in the hospital led them to realise that the cult and smuggling ring were working together.

At the end of the episode, Fox turned up at Elizabeth’s home again and said he was ready to work together.

The next episode is Good Bones. Elizabeth enlists the help of a Hollywood star to curb human trafficking in Kyrgyzstan, but the added attention puts an American captive at risk.
