On the season one finale of MacGyver, Mac and the team found the Phoenix Foundation under assault.
The episode opened up a bit differently to usual with a flashback to a few years ago. Mac (Lucas Till) and Jack (George Eads) were on a mission to Cairo where they found a dirty bomb. We didn’t get to see how the mission ended but it didn’t go to plan.
Back in the present day, Jack reminded Mac that it was the anniversary of the Cairo mission. Jack calls it Cairo day and they like to celebrate surviving the mission each year. Mac showed Jack the letter he sent to his father as it had been returned.
Matty (Meredith Eaton) introduced the team to a new member called Milton Zito who was some kind of materials genius. Bozer (Justin Hires) was told to show him around his lab. He was just showing him his latest prosthetic mask when Zito removed one he was wearing and stabbed Bozer.
Meanwhile the team got information about Zito and realised something was wrong. They rushed to Bozer to find him bleeding out. While Jack and the team went off to pursue Zito, Mac mixed some chemicals to seal his wound. It worked and saved Bozer’s life.
Zito had gone to holding and released Daniel Holt (William Mapother) who they captured last week. A guard had been overpowered and they were able to pull a print which Riley (Tristin Mays) used to identify Zito as a man named Jason Tennant. He was ex-SAS and had been imprisoned with Murdoc (David Dastmalchian).
Matty spoke to Murdoc and he explained that he taught Tennant. He had also paid him to murder everyone at the Phoenix Foundation. Matty confiscated his only possession which was a book and later found pages were missing. Tennant got Holt to the server room where he was able to take over the building.
Riley needed to get to the server room to regain control so Jack escorted her there. Riley ended up fighting with Holt and in the end he ended up shot and killed. The experience really affected Riley and she struggled to keep working. She eventually got the security camera network back online, it showed an army breaking into their building.
During all the chaos, Bozer was left to rest but he spotted something wrong on the video feed. The mask he made had been taken. He noticed Tennant walking past wearing it and managed to get up and turn on the fire sprinkler system which ruined the mask.
Tennant started shooting and found himself up against Matty. He grabbed one of her staff but she shot him in the leg and overpowered him.
Meanwhile, Mac and Jack were up against the invading soldiers who were there to steal the virus from earlier in the season. After a lot of fighting Mac and Jack came out on top.
Mac took the virus to Siberia and dropped it into a deep cavern so that it wouldn’t fall into the wrong hands again.
At the end of the episode, Murdoc was on the floor of his cell apparently passed out. His guard tried to wake him and then went into his cell. He turned him over and found his nose and mouth stuffed with the missing pages. The guard removed them and Murdoc sprung into life and killed him before presumably escaping.
MacGyver will return for a second season later this year.
