MacGyver 1×18 Flashlight preview

On the latest episode of MacGyver, Mac (Lucas Till) and the team headed to the Netherlands for a surveillance mission.

The episode opened up with Mac, Jack (George Eads) and Riley (Tristin Mays), somewhere in South Africa, pinned down by gunfire. Jack ran out of bullets and Riley’s laptop got shot. Mac cobbled together a flamethrower from items including a propane tank and bike wheel.

Suddenly a silver car appeared and took out all the bad guys. The team wondered who it was and then Bozer (Justin Hires) stepped out, dressed in a sharp suit and looking like James Bond. He said everything was under control and as the team celebrated he woke up in his prosthetics lab, he’d been dreaming.

Later, Matty (Meredith Eaton) gave the team a surveillance mission in Amsterdam. She felt the mission was perfect for Bozer’s first and he was excited to be going along. The woman they were watching took a phone call and the team listened in to what she was saying with a long distance microphone.

However, they couldn’t hear the other end of the conversation. Mac grabbed some headphones and an old radio. He then wired them into a nearby telephone exchange cabinet and heard some of the conversation. The woman retrieved a package and Mac realised straight away it was a bomb.

He rushed to get the bag she was carrying and found a bomb inside counting down. There was less than 2 minutes on the clock so the team had to move fast. Jack brought their surveillance van around and they sped away from the city centre. Mac worked out how much room they needed for the bomb to detonate safely.

They identified an empty car park and put the van in the middle. They then jumped out and ran as fast as they could as the bomb exploded. The Amsterdam Police were on the scene within minutes and thought the team must be responsible for the bomb.

Bozer wanted to explain who they were but Mac suggested they run. Although the Netherlands is an ally of the US they were there without permission risking an international incident. As the Dutch authorities began searching for them, Matty implemented emergency protocols and told them to get to an exfiltration point.

Dutch Intelligence identified the team and thought the US were spying and responsible for detonating the bomb. The various US Agencies denied knowledge of the team and Matty was forced to disavow them. This left them stranded and marked as terrorists.

Jack worried they might never be able to go home. Then he called on a girl he knew who thought he was a fashion photographer. They saw the woman who had the bomb on the TV, she was a member of politician.

Before leaving Mac dismantled some TV remotes and combined parts of the electronics with sunglasses. Wearing them would prevent facial recognition cameras from seeing their faces and identifying them.

They went to speak to the female politician and ambushed her while she was driving. She explained that she was blackmailed to pick up the package. She was told to drop it if anyone followed her. They realised that they were setup by Patricia Thornton.

Riley had a look at the blackmail emails and confirmed that the encryption keys matched those used previously by Thornton. Back at Phoenix, Matty called in a favour and had them drop a note in to Mac with details of Dutch Intelligence.

Riley used the information to work out how to clear their names. To do so she needed to get into Dutch Intelligence HQ. To get inside Mac asked Bozer to make them prosthetics which was tough without his workshop so he had to improvise.

It worked and allowed Riley and Mac to get past security at Dutch Intelligence. In the server room, Riley got to work on clearing their names. To give them more time, Bozer ran into the Dutch Intelligence building. Security were alerted and Jack started a fight to keep them busy. Eventually the three of them got caught but the distraction allowed Riley to release a video proving they weren’t responsible for the bomb.

At the end of the episode, the team arrived back at the Phoenix Foundation to a heroes welcome. Matty briefed them on the latest updates including details of who placed the bomb for Thornton. Mac told Bozer he did a good job and that he was proud of him. Back in his lab, Bozer decided he wanted to stay there instead of field work.
