Sexual Tension: Volatile DVD review

Film-makers Marco Berger and Marcelo Monaco have released the first instalment of a planned series of shorts collections. Titled Sexual Tension: Volatile, the release features six short films that explore the sexual tension between two men in a variety of situations. None of the situations feature openly gay characters so the sexual tension really builds under the different stories.

The stories featured over the six shorts are varied in nature but all of them serve up a satisfying watch. From a boy in lust with a tattoo artist through to a shy boy almost getting intimate with his room-mate, each story tells a tale of pining and lusting that all gay men can relate to. Who hasn’t had a major crush on someone that was likely unattainable? The Other One sees two good friends getting close in the most unusual way as one teaches the other one how to have sex with a girl.

Our favourite short was Workout which tells the story of two friends who exercise together. One of the friends teasingly convinces the other to strip away his layers of clothing so they can take some saucy photos together to entice some women to go out with them. Quite clearly one guy fancies the other and it’s not clear whether those feelings are reciprocated or not. Either way it made us a little hot under the collar and its final moments left us wanting more.

The sexual tension is perfectly captured in every short. That should come as no surprise when Marco Berger is involved. He served up one of the best gay movies of 2009 with his sexual tension-filled Plan B. That film left us almost screaming at the TV the tension was so intense and he does it all over again with Sexual Tension: Volatile. The camera-work really adds to the whole feel of the film with lots of lingering shots of men’s bodies and crotches. It really draws out the sex and helps build the tension.

Sexual Tension: Volatile is a fantastic collection of shorts. We look forward to future instalments and we definitely need a cold towel to mop our brow once the DVD finished. Full of hot men and some seriously teasing stories, Sexual Tension: Volatile serves up exactly what the title suggests. We may need to go and have a lie down.
