UFC Undisputed 2010 is the latest instalment in the Ultimate Fighting Champion series. Following on from UFC 2009 Undisputed the game is the second to be released under THQ’s agreement with the UFC. Anticipation for this title is high after the demo was released in April and the previous instalment was named Best Individual Sports Game and the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards.
UFC Undisputed 2010 is an upgrade on its predecessor with a series of improvements across the game to ensure it’s even more enjoyable. In terms of what’s new there are several key elements to highlight. Firstly the gameplay has been improved to include lots of new moves and strategies, and you can know use cage walls to exact the most devastating attacks on your opponent. Three new styles of fighting are included – karate, Greco-Roman wrestling and Sambo – to increase the variety of moves and attacks you can carry out. There’s also several new arenas and an improved career mode.
A nice touch in the game is the ‘game is watching you’ feature which remembers all of your fights and adds that into the commentary over the course of future matches. This makes the game feel tailored to your experience as the commentators highlight key moves or killer blows you’ve carried out in previous matches.
The game extends well past the initial single player mode too. You can hook up with a friend either in person or online and take the UFC experience to a new level. The online aspect is controlled via Online Fight Camps where the real-life equivalents are faithfully recreated complete with Camp Message Of The Day.
Visually UFC Undisputed 2010 looks superb. The detailed fighters and crowded arenas translate fantastically for an HD ready audience. The game curbs the bloody violence with minimal blood spatters as you beat the life out of your opponent. You do however see your opponent’s face become beaten and bruised the more you hit him so this game isn’t the most child-friendly.
Don’t let UFC Undisputed 2010 fool you in terms of its initial ease. That is the trap we fell into when we won a string of matches in Beginner mode before being total floored in the final match. It is at this point that we realised the control system isn’t the easiest to pull off. If a fighter pins you to the floor it can be near impossible to get up before they pop your arm out of the socket and end the match. We found this really frustrating because the same sense of inevitability fell over us match-after-match (and no we weren’t just really bad at the game!).
UFC Undisputed 2010 is a game that will appeal to fans of fighting and boxing titles. It’s a great way to while away a wet afternoon and there’s enough engaging gameplay to keep you occupied for a fair few hours. If you’re not a fan of violence then we’d suggest you look elsewhere. As far as fighting games go this is one of the strongest we’ve played in quite some time.
