The Tale of Doris and the Dragon – Episode 1 review

The Tale of Doris and the Dragon is a point-and-click adventure game from Arrogant Pixel. This is a review of the first episode of three.

The game follows an elderly lady named Doris who has sadly passed away. Being dead doesn’t stop her going on an adventure which begins when she finds herself stuck in purgatory.

Doris is a brilliant character who hasn’t got time for messing about. She’s straight to the point and nothing seems to phase her, not even talking yellow dragons or demons. She’s a bit concerned though that her husband Albert is nowhere to be found. He’s surely in for a telling off when she catches up with him.

Near the start of her adventure Doris meets Norb, a scouse dragon who is an administrative assistant of sorts. He’s there to help people like Doris and gives her a communication device to contact him.

Throughout the adventure Doris is accompanied by her shopping trolley. It’s a stroke of luck because, in true adventure fashion, there are plenty of random items for her to collect. The shopping trolley also removes the question of how she’s able to carry so many objects around.

Controlling the action is easy with simple taps to move and interact with objects. As you’d expect there are plenty of puzzles and these are usually overcome by finding the correct items. Some puzzles make sense while others are a little obtuse and require some thought. One of them is a musical puzzle that will have many players stumped for a while.

Graphically the game has gone for an old school pixel aesthetic. It fits the game perfectly but while many players will love it others may find it a little off-putting. The writing is full of humour that will have you chuckling while you play. Doris is the star of the game but I also really enjoyed the voice-acting for the various characters you meet.

During play you can save your progress whenever you like. In the pre-release build this led to a few inventory bugs. However I’m happy to report that Arrogant Pixel have since patched the game to resolve these issues.

Adventure fans will find plenty to love about the first episode of The Tale of Doris and the Dragon. It’s a great start that will leave you desperate to play the second episode.
