Alien: Isolation
After the dreadful Aliens Colonial Marines we were starting to wonder if we’d ever get another decent Aliens game. Thankfully The Creative Assembly and SEGA stepped up to the mark with this entry into the survival horror genre. Set 15 years after the events of Alien, players stepped into the shoes of Ripley’s daughter Ellen. Essential for fans of the Alien films.
Assassin’s Creed Unity
This year Ubisoft have treated fans to two new Assassin’s Creed games. Xbox One owners will want to pick up Assassin’s Creed Unity which is set in Paris during the French Revolution. Ubisoft may still be fixing some bugs with the game but it’s easily the best looking game in the series so far. There’s also four-player online co-op.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
With an extra year in development and a future setting this year’s Call of Duty from Sledgehammer Games has given the series a new lease of life. There’s a brilliant single-player campaign featuring Kevin Spacey and a fresh take on the multiplayer game. This will keep First-Person Shooter fans busy well into 2015.
Destiny
Bungie selling the rights to their beloved Halo franchise came as a big surprise but the ambition of their next title was not. Destiny merges the MMO and FPS genres in new ways resulting in an addictive online-shooter that we can’t stop going back to. Great for shooter fans who love to play online with friends.
Far Cry 4
The perfect gift for fans of Far Cry 3. The fourth instalment brings more of the same open-world shooter but it’s better than ever. Player take the role of Ajay Ghale who is travelling to the Himalayan town of Kyrat to fulfill his mother’s dying wish. As soon as you arrive you find yourself caught up in a civil war to overthrow the oppressive regime of dictator Pagan Min.
FIFA 15
With improved graphics and controls as well as a myriad of other improvements FIFA 15 from EA Sports will be top of every football fans gaming wishlist.
Grand Theft Auto V
Although available last year, for Xbox 360 and PS3, gamers will still want to grab a copy of GTA V for their Xbox One. The game has been remastered with better graphics and sound, more content and a new first-person mode.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Now in the hands of 343 Industries the Halo franchise is getting ready for the return of the Master Chief in Halo 5. Before then Xbox One gamers are in for a treat with this remastered collection of the first four Halo games on a single disc. Lords of the Fallen
Xbox One gamers will have to wait until 2015 to play Dark Souls II. In the meantime the next best thing is Lords of the Fallen. Featuring a similar setup but a lot more forgiving it’s great for gamers who love a challenge.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
Games based around films and books never seen to turn out all that great. Instead Warner Bros and Monolith have come up with a game set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth and it’s one of the surprise hits of the year. The game features brutal combat and a brilliant nemesis system.
Sunset Overdrive
Set in the near-future where a contaminated energy drink turns the majority of the population into zombies. Sunset Overdrive is the new Jet Set Radio and it’s an absolute blast to play.
Titanfall
Respawn Entertainment breathed new life into the FPS genre with Titanfall. Putting players in the role of pilots of giant mechs and adding wonderful parkour-style movement. Summoning your Titan down from space never gets old. Essential for any shooter fan.
The Crew
Ubisoft’s latest is an action-driving MMO where players can team up with friends and make the entire US their playground. A great choice for car racing fans.
The Evil Within
For horror fans there is only one game this year and it’s Shinji Mikami’s (Resident Evil) The Evil Within.
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Play as American war hero, B.J. Blazkowicz, as he battles the Nazi’s in a version of the world where they won World War II. A great choice for shooter fans who prefer single-player over multiplayer.
