Strike Suit Zero Director’s Cut Xbox One review

Back in January last year Born Ready Games, a Guildford-based indie developer, released their first game – Strike Suit Zero on PC thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign where they nearly doubled their initial target. Three months later released a score-attack spin-off called Strike Suit Infinity. Now they have revisited Zero to bring it to Xbox One and PS4.

The key to enjoying Strike Suit Zero is learning to master the controls. Players must pilot a Strike Suit which is a futuristic space ship that comes with the ability to transform into an awesome mech as long as you have Flux available. Flux is collected each time you destroy enemies and space junk. Controlling a Strike Suit well takes a lot of practice as there are plenty of button presses needed. In ship form you are very manoeuvrable and able to thrust forward as well as roll your ship.

You can fires your guns or activate missile lock. It is possible to lock onto multiple targets before firing your missiles. The Suit’s is capable of targeting whatever is in front of you or the nearest target depending on your targeting priority. For double damage you can link your guns but this drains their energy faster. To survive incoming missiles you are equipped with an EMP device which must be triggered when they are in range to disable them. There are helpful audio cues to make this possible.

Once you have built up Flux you can transform into your mech form. In mech form your manoeuvrability is significantly decreased but it makes up for this with increased combat ability. You become more of a stationary platform of death that can auto-target with more powerful firepower. While in this mode you have limited mobility but your dodge manoeuvre is useful. Flux is used up each time you attack so you need to be careful not to waste shots as when depleted you will automatically turn back to ship mode.

The restructured 13-mission campaign is set in the year 2299. The Human race has spread across the galaxy thanks to information take from an alien signal. As new colonies were formed they wanted independence from Earth which has led to all-out war. In addition to the main campaign the Director’s Cut also comes with the Heroes of the Fleet expansion where you take part in famous historical battles. This release also features two new unlockable Strike Suits – The Marauder and Raptor – each bring different styles of play to the game.

Graphically the game looks lovely with new ship models, enhanced textures and improved lighting. At times it can be stunning to look at with colourful nebulae, stars and planets acting as the backdrop. The ship designs are excellent thanks to input from Junji Okunbo (Steel Battalion, Appleseed: Ex Machina) and there is beautiful music from Paul Ruskay (Homeworld) and Japanese singer/songwriter Kokia (Tales of Innocence) too.

Strike Suit Zero remains a tough game to master but if you enjoy space combat games then you should definitely give it a go. It’s clear that Born Ready Games have listened to feedback from the community resulting in an improved release over the PC version.
