Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Episode 2 review

Having never been a big fan of episodic games I wasn’t sure what to expect when I heard Resident Evil: Revelations 2 was going to be releases in four parts. Going into Episode 1 with little expectations I came away wanting more.

True to the episodic format the first instalment ended on a cliffhanger. Episode 2 picks up right after events of the first and wastes no time getting you back into the action.

Like the first episode this one is split up into two chapters. The first is again with Claire and Moira with the second back with Barry and Natalia. Revelations 2 is designed for co-op play so while you can take it on solo with an AI partner and switch characters it’s highly recommended to bring a friend.

The different playstyles between the pairs of characters remains and having it this way really brings out the need to co-operate. There is no competition between you and your partner as it’s essential that you work together to survive.

New enemies start to crop up in this episode and they certainly keep things interesting and challenging. The developers have done a great job dreaming up monsters that require you to use your skills together to take them down such as Moira shining her flashlight to daze while Claire unloads her guns. There are also exploding zombies that you need to stay clear of when they die.

My favourite is definitely the new invisible enemies that Barry and Natalia face. You can sense when they are close by the noise they make and also the screen starts to distort. Barry can’t see them while they are alive but Natalia can make out a red aura. So together you need to have Natalia point at them while guiding Barry’s aim.

The experience points you earn can be used to unlock skills for the various characters and by this episode you start to see the benefit. It’s possible to do things like increase attack damage, quicker reloading and faster healing. Some skills can be improved several times but it will take a while before you can earn the majority of them.

This episode also brings some great set pieces and nice tough boss fights to overcome. In Claire’s chapter there’s a fight in a room with a big zombie that is brandishing a huge drill. With scarcity of supplies you need to make every bullet count. You also need to co-ordinate your movements together so you have time to heal. The tougher fights can get really tense and often the final blows need to be landed with melee weapons.

After you’re done with the campaign the game has plenty of life left with the excellent Raid mode. There’s an additional 50 or so missions to unlock along with new characters. The large number of secrets and collectibles throughout the game are also going to keep you busy for a long time.

Contemplation manages to build on the impressive start by Penal Colony. The co-op gameplay is fantastic and the story is coming together nicely. If you’ve played through the first episode then you simply must pick this up too. At the halfway point it looks like Revelations 2 is turning into a really strong entry into the Resident Evil series.
