If you play games on Facebook or a mobile device then you’re probably already addicted to at least one of King’s titles. With Candy Crush Saga they found a formula that works and they’ve applied it to their recent releases with success. The next of their Facebook games to make the transition to mobile is Pyramid Solitaire Saga.
If you imagine taking the core game of Solitaire, mixing it with Mahjong against an Egyptian theme then you’ll have an idea of what to expect here. The game follows a treasure hunter named Helena and Kingsley, her cure gerbil companion, as they go in search of the lost relics of the ancient Egyptians.
Pyramid Solitaire Saga is another free-to-play offering from King that features their usual setup. The first 20 or so levels are quite easy to beat as you learn the game. New concepts are gradually introduced to you as well as the optional in-app purchases that you can make to help boost you.
There’s currently 140 levels on offer and for us things began getting trickier towards level 25. By then you’ll know if it’s your type of game and players that enjoy it but are struggling will be tempted to buy boost items in order to progress quicker.
The game is all about collecting cards and uses the normal solitaire setup. Cards start at Ace and run through the numbers to 10 followed by Jack, Queen, King and then Ace again. Cards are stacked in pyramid like formations and your job is to clear the gold cards at the bottom of each pile.
To remove a card from the play area you need to hold a card that is one number higher or lower. You have a set number of cards in your deck and can only turn over one at a time. If your deck runs out then it is game over. When you clear a gold card then a scarab is released which you can try and catch for extra score by tapping it.
To beat a level you don’t need to clear all the cards but you do need to get rid of the gold ones. To progress you also need to ensure you meet at least minimum score threshold in order to acquire one to three stars.
To help you along the way you find Joker cards which can be used to match and clear any card on the board. Eventually you also unlock the ability to hold one card in your deck until you need it. Things also get more difficult with the introduction of special cards that need to be matched twice and those that require you find a key first. Levels also introduce challenges such as getting a run of matching cards.
Once you get into it the game is pretty fun. The tougher levels can require some planning to overcome but at times the game also feels unfair. It can be frustrating when your only option is to keep turning over cards or buying boosts.
Overall Pyramid Solitaire Saga is another addictive game from King. It will appeal most to fans of Solitaire and Mahjong but anyone who enjoys King’s other games should find plenty to like here. The game is available now for iOS and Android devices.
