Monster Snack review

Monster Snack is a new take on the popular endless runner genre by Total Eclipse (Fashion Getaway). The game started out as a simple one-month challenge for the Greek indie developers who then decided to spend a couple of months extra on it.

Most endless runners that we’ve seen simply ask the player to tap the screen to jump and duck various obstacles. With Monster Snack the developers have added in a little puzzle element to make things more interesting.

Here you play as Monsieur LeCroque who is flying along in his rocket ship. He’s being pursued by a huge hungry purple monster called Gaspaude. In order to stay ahead and prevent himself becoming dinner LeCroque must zap crystals for fuel.

The crystals pass above and below your ship and start out quite large. As you progress they become smaller and harder to hit. The puzzle element is that you can only gain fuel by shooting the correct colour of crystal that your rocket needs. This is displayed on the side of your ship.

So as well as timing your shot to hit a crystal you must also ensure that it is the colour you need. A single mistake is all that is needed for Gaspaude to catch up to you so you need to be careful. Shooting a crystal in the middle gains you the most fuel which eventually gives you a boost ability to escape the Monster if things go bad.

Along the way the game also features power-ups which must be tapped on in order to collect them. If you get eaten you can spend a Jolt power-up in order to escape and continue your run. These can also be bought via in-app purchases for a small fee. The game also features the ability to remove adverts for a small fee.

The game is fun in small doses but it takes a little too long to get going. This means the first minute or so is always a bit too easy and replaying this gets frustrating. This spoils the addictiveness of the game a little.

Due to the simplicity of the design the game is also light on content. The developers are planning to add to it over time but there are only leaderboards to keep you playing. The addition of some challenges, extra modes or more variety of locations would keep people playing longer.

Monster Snack is a fun little game but for now it’s a little too simple for many players. Younger players will likely get the most out of it. However with future updates, a little more variety and tweaking of the gameplay the developers could well have a winner.
