Game of Thrones 7×07 The Dragon and the Wolf recap

Game of Thrones returned for the seventh and final episode of the season. The episode saw a huge meeting between most of the major characters at the Dragonpit. It also revealed some very important information and set events in motion ahead of the final season.

If you haven’t seen Game of Thrones season 7 finale yet and don’t want anything spoiled then please stop reading now. If you are up-to-date and want to relive the action then keep on reading.

The season finale wasted no time and opened up with Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) and the Unsullied army stood in formation outside of King’s Landing. Inside Bronn (Jerome Flynn) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) had the Lannister army prepare defences should fighting break out. They had 500 barrels of oil ready and Bronn requested that they get 500 more.

They pondered why the Unsullied fought for Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and also why Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) supported her. Jaime said that his brother was a champion of the downtrodden. Suddenly the huge Dothraki army rode in to join the Unsullied and Jaime said that they might be about to become the downtrodden.

Meanwhile, Dany’s fleet arrived at the Red Keep. Amongst the fleet were Tyrion, Varys (Conleth Hill), Theon (Alfie Allen), Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Ser Jorah(Iain Glen), Ser Davos (Liam Cunningham) and Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel). Below deck The Hound (Rory McCann) was shown creeping about in the dark with a lantern. He was checking on a crate that contained the captured wight.

At King’s Landing, Cersei (Lena Headey) spoke with Qyburn (Anton Lesser) and her brother Jaime. She was told that everyone was on the way to Dragonpit for a meeting. Cersei told the Mountain (Hafthor Julius Bjornsson) to kill Dany first.

On land, Jon and his party made their way towards the Dragonpit on foot. On the way they met with Bronn and Lannister soldiers. Also with them was Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) and Podrick (Daniel Portman). The Hound and Brienne spotted each other for the first time since their encounter when she left him for dead. They spoke and The Hound said she had come close to killing him. She explained she was only trying to protect Arya (Maisie Williams) and he said he was doing the same. Brienne told him that Arya was now at Winterfell.

Tyrion spoke with Bronn and restated his offer to double whatever Cersei was paying him. He said she was looking after himself. They both agreed that it was good to see each other again. Lannister soldiers approached the crate containing the wight and the Hound said he would kill anyone who touched it.

Once they arrived at the Dragonpit, Bronn decided to leave them to it and took Podrick for a drink. It was beginning to look like a trap. The Hound wondered if he was destined to die in King’s Landing.

Soon after they arrived, Cersei walked in followed by the Mountain, Euron (Pilou Asbæk) and Jaime. As they took their seats, the Hound spotted his brother and approached him. He asked if he remembered him and told him that he would be coming for him as his brother always knew. Cersei wanted to know where Dany was and they told her that she would arrive soon.

On cue, Drogon and Rhaegal appeared in the sky and everyone looked on in wonder and fear. Cersei certainly looked worried as Drogon landed in the pit. Dany climbed down and walked over to her seat as Drogon took to the air. Cersei was annoyed at having to wait and Dany apologised.

Tyrion was the first to stand and began to explain the reason for the meeting. Euron spotted Theon and couldn’t help himself so he interrupted. He asked that Theon submit to him or he would kill Yara (Gemma Whelan). Cersei told Euron to sit down or leave.

Tyrion continued that they were a group of people who did not like one another and that they had suffered and lost at each other’s hands. Cersei wanted to know why they had come and Jon took the stage. He said it wasn’t about living in harmony, just about living as the Army of the Dead were coming.

Cersei didn’t believe him and gave a smart answer. Jon said it was serious and wanted a truce. Cersei thought it was all a bad joke. Dany gave her word that the capital would be safe and said they had something to show.

The Hound appeared carrying the large crate containing the wight. Everyone looked on while he set it down and began to unlock it. He opened it and nothing happened so he kicked it over. The wight charged out straight at Cersei and she looked terrified. No one could believe what they were seeing as the Hound cut the wight in two. However, it didn’t die and began crawling along the floor. He chopped off one of its hands and that also continued to move.

An intrigued Qyburn stepped forward to grab the hand. Jon took it from him and explained to all that they could burn the undead or kill them with Dragonglass. He gave a demonstration of both. Jon said that there was only one war that matters, the Great War, and it was here.

Euron asked how many undead there were and was told 100,000 at least. He asked if they could swim and was told no. He said that was good and that he was taking his fleet back to the Iron Islands until winter was over. He said the undead was the only thing that terrified him. As he left Cersei said he was right to be afraid and coward to run.

After a pause, Cersei said she accepted the truce until the Army of the Dead were defeated. It all seemed too easy and then she made a request that Jon, the king of the north, stay in the north. She knew that Ned Starks son would keep his word. Jon thought for a moment and then said no. He explained he already pledged himself to Dany and wouldn’t serve two Queens.

Annoyed, Cersei said there was nothing to discuss and stormed out. Brienne appealed to Jaime to talk to his sister. Everyone was a bit upset with Jon for not just lying and saying whatever Cersei needed to hear. Jon said there could be no false promises. Tyrion requested they all stay while he went to talk to his sister.

Tyrion was escorted by the Mountain and met with Jaime on they way. He asked if his brother had spoken with Cersei. Jaime said she had kicked him out and branded him an idiot to trust Tyrion. Concerned for Tyrion’s life they wondered if they should say their goodbyes, one idiot to another.

Cersei met with Tyrion and immediately insulted Dany. She said she wasn’t surprised to see him with another foreign whore. Tyrion tried to explain that he didn’t want to destroy their family. Cersei wasn’t convinced as he had killed their father. He explained that he had little choice as their father sentenced him to death for something he didn’t do.

Cersei wasn’t in the mood for listening so Tyrion told her everything was his fault. He said she might as well put an end to him and he even told the Mountain to do it. Cersei looked like she wanted to put despite everything she couldn’t. Tyrion relieved at still being alive grabbed a glass of wine and downed it. He said he really was more sorry about her children than she’d ever know. Cersei said she only cared about what it cost them. Tyrion explained that he supported Dany because he felt she would make the world a better place. Before he left he realised that Cersei was pregnant.

Back at the Dragonpit, Jon picked up a dragon bone and spoke with Dany. He knew everyone was unhappy with him but said he was the most unhappy. Dany said she respected him for what he had done. As she looked around the Dragonpit she said that a dragon is not a slave and that that place was the beginning of the end for her family. Jon said she wasn’t like everyone else and assured her that her family hadn’t seen its end. She explained that she couldn’t have children but Jon asked if she was sure.

Tyrion returned and Cersei and the others soon followed. She announced that her armies would not stand down. Instead they would march north to fight together with Jon and Dany. She wondered if they would remember that she had helped if they were successful but presumed not.

At Winterfell, Littlefinger (Aiden Gillen) continued his games and worked on manipulating Sansa (Sophie Turner). She was annoyed that Jon had bent the knee to Dany without speaking to her first. Littlefinger suggested that Jon and Dany might decide to wed. They also spoke of Arya and he explained that he always assumes the worst in people. He tried to get Sansa to think about what Arya was up to and put ideas into her head. He wanted her to think that Arya had returned to kill her so she could become the Lady of Winterfell.

At Dragonstone, Dany, Jon returned and held a meeting in the map room. They began making plans to go to Winterfell. Jorah suggested that she fly as it was the safest option due to her many enemies. However, Jon suggested it would be better for the north to see them together as allies. Dany agreed to sail together to White Harbour and said she was coming to save the north not attack it.

Before they left Theon requested to speak to Jon. He said that Jon could have lied to Cersei but had risked everything to tell their enemy the truth. Jon explained how he felt it was best to be honest. Theon was jealous how Jon had always seemed to know what was right. Jon said he regretted many things but nothing compared to what Theon had done. Theon said he always wanted to do the right thing but had impossible choices being torn between Stark or Greyjoy.

Jon said despite betraying their father he would forgive what he could and explained that Theon didn’t need to choose as he was both. Theon spoke of how his sister Yara was the only one to try and save him from Ramsay. He said Yara needed him and Jon wondered why Theon was still talking to him then instead of doing something.

Theon headed down to the beach to speak to what was left of his men. He found them loading boats and they said they were going to sail to an island and kill anyone they found there to stay safe from the dead. Theon said that they had chosen to follow Yara and that they should find her and set her free. One man spat in his face and a fight broke out between them. Theon took a hell of a beating but despite being told to stay down or be killed he kept getting up for more. The man decided to knee him in the groin but was surprised that it didn’t bother him. A smile crept across Theon’s face and he beat the man to death. As he walked to the water the rest of the men shouted ’For Yara!’

Back at Winterfell, Sansa seemed deep in thought before asking for Arya to be brought to the Great Hall. In the Hall, Littlefinger and Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) were also present. It didn’t look great for Arya and she asked Sansa if she was sure she wanted to do this. Sansa began talking and said the charges were murder and treason. Littlefinger looked pleased until he realised Sansa was directing the accusations at him and not Arya.

He said he was confused so Sansa began explaining how he murdered their aunt Lysa by pushing her out the Moon Door at the Eyrie. She also spoke of how he conspired with Cersei. As further proof, Bran explained more things that he knew. They knew the knife he told their mother Catelyn was not Tyrions. Littlefinger knew he was in trouble and appealed to Sansa. He asked for a chance to explain and even got on his knees to beg. Arya walked forward and slit his throat with the knife he gave Bran and he bled out on the floor.

Back at King’s Landing, Cersei walked in on Jaime at the map room. He was making plans to march the army to Winterfell. She explained that she had lied and had no intention of doing so. Instead she would keep the army there and their child would eventually rule. She explained that while the others killed each other she would retake their lands. Jaime tried to get her to listen and said it didn’t matter if the living or the dead won. Whichever did they would then come and kill them all.

Cersie wondered why Dany had only brought two dragons with her and presumed that her third was dead. She explained that they had the support of the Iron Bank and that Euron had gone to bring the 20,000 strong Golden Company mercenaries back from Essos.

Jaime said he had every intention of keeping his word. Cersei said it would be treason if he went north and that no one walked away from her. As Jaime turned to leave the Mountain drew his sword and waited for her command. She thought she could control Jaime but he called her bluff and said he didn’t believe her. He walked away and the Mountain left him alone. As Jaime rode out, winter arrived at King’s Landing and it began to snow.

At Winterfell, Sam (John Bradley) and Gilly (Hannah Murray) arrived. Sam popped in to see Bran and wondered if he remembered him. Creepy Bran explained how he remembered everything. He said Sam was a good man who had helped him get beyond the wall. Sam asked what he had done there and Bran said he became the Three eyed raven. Sam was confused so Bran told him how he can now see everything.

Bran asked why Sam had returned to Winterfell and he replied that he came to help Jon. Bran said he was on his way back. Sam asked if he has seen it in a vision but Bran held up a letter he received by Raven.

Bran said that Jon needed to know the truth about himself. He explained how he was the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. He was born in a tower in Dorne and his bastard name was Sand not snow. It seems that Bran doesn’t quite know everything though as Sam explained what Gilly had found in the Citadel. He told Bran of the annulment and then secret wedding between Rhaegar and Lyanna. This meant that Jon wasn’t a bastard and that king Robert’s rebellion was built on a lie.

Bran used his powers to go back in time and witness the events that confirmed everything. He discovered Jon’s real name was Aegon Targaryen and that he was the true heir to the throne. Bran said that Jon needed to know. Meanwhile, Jon and Dany had sex while on the boat to White Harbour.

Back at Winterfell, Sansa and Arya stood and chatted. Arya asked if Sansa was ok and she replied that she felt strange because she believed Littlefinger did love her in his own creepy way. Arya said she had done the right thing. Sansa said Arya was the strongest person she knows. Arya said it was the nicest thing Sanas had ever said to her. Sansa said that Arya was still strange and annoying. They both agreed that they missed their father.

Meanwhile, creepy Bran was having himself another warg session at the weirwood tree. He was viewing the events at Eastwatch. Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) and Beric (Richard Dormer) were looking out beyond the Wall. They saw the White Walkers and the Army of the Dead appear and begin marching towards them.

Suddenly they heard a dragon and the Night King appeared riding on the back of the resurrected Viserion. Amongst his army, giants could also be spotted. He flew up to the Wall and Viserion began attacking it by unleashing his breath. It made short work of the Wall and it began to crumble. Tormund, Beric and the Wildlings began scrambling to evacuate and many were killed. Their fates remain unknown. The episode ended as a portion of the Wall was completely destroyed and the Army of the Dead began to make their way south with the Night King flying overhead. Eek!
