Molly’s Game review

Aaron Sorkin’s directorial debut is nothing short of a masterpiece. The genius behind The Social Network, Steve Jobs and The West Wing brings together the stunning duo of Jessica Chastain & Idris Elba for this remarkable true story about the life of Molly Bloom. Sorkin also wrote the script (which is based on Bloom’s autobiographical book), delivering a story that is immensely relevant in today’s skewered world of fake news, corruption and the challenges facing women in a world run by powerful men.

A former Olympic-level skier who had a forced change of career and now is struggling to find her place in the world, Molly (Chastain) finds herself involved, and later organising, high-stakes gambling for Hollywood’s elite. When the FBI come knocking, Molly’s world is turned upside down as she vehemently fights for her name, even though her prospects look insurmountable.

Jessica Chastain simply ignites the screen, delivering a powerhouse performance full of integrity, passion and genuine heart as Molly Bloom. Easily the finest actress working in Hollywood today, Chastain brings a warmth and understanding to every character she inhabits. Molly’s story is a complex one but Chastain manages those complexities with a lightness of touch that feels effortless when it’s anything but. This is Oscar-worthy work here, and she’ll be robbed if she doesn’t take home Academy Award gold for this dynamic and career-defining role.

Idris Elba is wonderful as her reluctant legal counsel Charlie Jaffey, giving the popular Brit actor a superbly rounded character to play. His exchanges with Chastain are mesmerizing, and not just because of Sorkin’s blistering dialogue. The two have undeniable chemistry that lends itself perfectly to the story. Elba’s back-and-forth with his onscreen daughter is also wonderfully paced. Throw in a scene-stealing turn from screen legend Kevin Costner as Molly’s unrelenting father Larry, and you have a story bursting with talent and creativity.

Molly’s Game is a gripping, exhilarating and utterly intense ride that deserves huge awards season recognition. With writing this tight, performed by talent so in tune with the source material, and with a keen eye for dramatic setting, Molly’s Game a true revelation. Sorkin’s directorial debut proves that he is as naturally accomplished behind the camera as he is with words. The fact that it’s a true story just adds even more gravitas to proceedings and guarantees an unforgettable night out at the cinema watching a drama of true substance and guile.
