In the run up to the festive season Mariah (Breanna Yde) sees a puppy named Princess at a pet shop and begs her parents to let her have it. They initially refuse but then agree with Mariah that if she can look after her uncle’s dog Jack and prove she’s responsible, they’ll reconsider. Mariah enthusiastically agrees, expecting owning a dog to be an absolute breeze but she quickly finds herself up against an almighty challenge when Jack is anything but well behaved.

Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You is based on the diva’s festive 1994 hit of the same name and the 2015 book of the same name. Featuring Carey as the narrator, the film tells a sweet story that is suitable for the whole family. Mariah, in the film, is one of three children and she lives with her parents and grandparents. From the opening moments Mariah yearns to have a puppy of her own and she’s disappointed when she’s excluded from a Christmas show because she doesn’t have one.

The animated feature is incredibly heart-warming. It explores coming-of-age to a degree as Mariah has to prove that she’s capable of taking on serious responsibility. Like most children, I remember being similar at Mariah’s age, she expects having a dog to be all fun and no hard work. Of course she finds the complete opposite when Jack proves to be a nightmare on walks, destructive in the house and a capable escape artist. The experience makes Mariah reconsider whether or not she’s ready to be a dog owner but through gritted teeth she tries to make it work, convinced Princess will be better behaved.

Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You features 3 classic Mariah Christmas Songs – All I Want For Christmas Is You, Christmas Time is in the Air Again and Miss You Most (At Christmastime) – as well as the fantastic new track Lil’ Snowman, which is an upbeat burst of festive joy. The film’s young star Breanna Yde also contributes her own version of All I Want For Christmas Is You and Issac Ryan Brown, who voices Mariah’s brother Brett, performs Wild & Crazy Christmas.

Extra features on the disc include featurette A Wish Come True: Making Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You where Carey and Yde talk about the movie and Christmas.

Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You is an absolute joy of a movie. To be honest I don’t know why it wasn’t released in cinemas as it’s the perfect movie for families this festive season. The film is incredibly sweet, surprisingly emotional and a wonderful celebration of the best time of year. Mariah Carey has created a fantastic movie that is sure to become a family favourite in the years to come.
