The Girl on the Train arrives in UK cinemas today

DreamWorks Pictures’ thriller The Girl on the Train arrives in UK cinemas today.

Based on the best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins, the film has been adapted for the screen by Erin Cressida Wilson.

Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) leads a star-studded cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson (Florence Foster Jenkins), Haley Bennett (The Magnificent Seven), Justin Theroux (The Leftovers), Luke Evans (Furious 7), Allison Janney (The West Wing), Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum), Lisa Kudrow (Friends) and Laura Prepon (Orange is the New Black)

In The Girl on the Train, Rachel (Blunt), who is devastated by her recent divorce, spends her daily commute fantasising about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she sees something shocking happen there and becomes entangled in the mystery that unfolds.

The film is directed by Tate Taylor (The Help, Get on Up) and produced by Marc Platt (Bridge of Spies, Into the Woods). The executive producers are Jared LeBoff and Celia Costas, and it will be released by Universal Pictures.

Paula Hawkins’ novel was released in 2015 and it debuted on The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2015. To date the book has sold over 11 million copies worldwide. The story was originally set in the UK but for the film adaptation it has been relocated to the US.

Speaking to Jonathan Ross recently Emily Blunt admitted that she didn’t read the book until she was in talks for the part of Rachel. ā€œI think because I saw everyone reading it, I was trying to be contrary and say, ā€˜Well Iā€™m not going to read it if everyoneā€™s reading it.ā€™ I was pushing back against the train and then I got offered the film and then shallowly ran to the bookstore to get a copy.ā€

During the same interview Emily also admitted that she approached playing an alcoholic with caution saying: ā€œI was worried because I think it can potentially look like the drunk uncle act. I watched a lot of documentaries on alcoholism and addiction then I read books and I have a couple of friends who are recovering so I spoke to them a lot because it is one of the harder things to do, to act drunk. I think that was something I was concerned about.ā€

Early word on the film has seen Emily picking up widespread critical acclaim for her performance and The Girl on the Train is set to be one of the biggest films of the year.
