Moonlight leads this year’s Oscar winners

Moonlight has picked up the Best Picture award at the 89th Academy Awards aka The Oscars.

In an unfortunate gaffe, actor Warren Beatty read out the wrong winner for the category announcing it as La La Land. He was soon corrected and revealed that the actual winner was Moonlight and that Beatty was given the wrong announcement card.

La La Land was expected to take Best Picture so Moonlight’s win was a bit of a surprise. Moonlight also picked up Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali and Best Adapted Screenplay for Barry Jenkins and Alvin McCraney.

Despite not winning Best Picture, La La Land picked up 6 awards over the course of the evening including Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Director for Damien Chazelle.

Other big winners on the night included Manchester by the Sea, which picked up 2 awards and Viola Davis who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences.
