The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has tried to fast-track the successful formula Marvel have adopted so convincingly over the last decade. It has had less favourable results, with a darker tone and a desire to let effects do most of their talking.

Man of Steel was DC’s big new hope, bringing in Henry Cavill to the iconic role and delivering another origin story that was to set up this ongoing universe. It had its problems but Cavill made for a solid choice as Superman and the film had some good ideas, even though the finale was a CGI onslaught. It was also a crying shame that Superman wasn’t given at least one sequel to properly cement his status at the top of the DCEU tree. Instead, Batman v Superman came next.

It seems Zack Snyder took everything people didn’t like from Man of Steel and amplified it in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This was a really mixed film. Check out our detailed look at the highs and lows of this movie in the article below.

After the less than favourable reviews (and that hilarious Ben Affleck meme), DC were kind of on the ropes. Financially committed to a universe of films that hadn’t struck a chord with audiences yet, Suicide Squad was next up to bat.

This one had really split audiences. I was in the minority and really enjoyed the film. You could see where the film was spliced together from re-edits and reshoots. It would have been great to see director David Ayer’s original vision to compare it with, but I liked Suicide Squad for what it was and this at least sparked interest in the rest of the DCEU.

Wonder Woman was the saving grace though. Touted as one of their lesser films, DC were cautious over the film and hardly promoted it. Thankfully the Gal Gadot-led action blockbuster was a huge success, finally giving the DC Extended Universe a real movie to champion.

This takes us to Justice League, a film that a few years ago would have had fanboys and girls from around the world foaming at the mouth. But given its troubled past, the lead-up to this Superhero showdown is far more subdued than it really ought to be.

Let’s take a look at what we know so far about Justice League.
