Jason Bourne, Finding Dory, The Commune and more: In cinemas this week

Stuck for what to watch at the weekend? Let Entertainment Focus help you with our handy guide to this week’s new releases. From the biggest blockbusters to the best in independent and world cinema, we’ve got it covered.

Jason Bourne

What’s it about? True to their word, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass always said they would return to the Bourne franchise if the story was right. After a deeply regrettable attempt to expand the “Treadstone” mythology in The Bourne Legacy, the original gang are back together, with Damon’s former CIA assassin once again being drawn out of hiding to confront the shadowy organisations that want him dead. You’d think by now they’d know to just leave him be! Expect more of the same fast-paced and bruising action these films are known for. If there’s anything as good as the Moscow car chase from Supremacy, I think we’ll all be happy.

Who’s in it? Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, Tommy Lee Jones

Finding Dory

What’s it about? Not including the Toy Story films, Pixar’s record with sequels has not been exemplary (Cars 2, Monsters University). That is until now. Finding Nemo director Andrew Stanton has created a sequel that is as funny, exciting, and as heartfelt as the original. Struck by a sudden burst of memories from her past, Dory, the little blue amnesiac fish sets off on a quest to find her family, leading her to the Marine Life Institute in California. With fantastic new characters and spectacular animation, Finding Dory should dominate the box office for the rest of the summer.

Who’s in it? Voices: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Ed O’Neill, Kaitlin Olson, Ty Burrell, Eugene Levy, Diane Keaton, Hayden Rolence

The Commune

What’s it about? From director Thomas Vinterberg, comes this 70s set dark comedy about life in a Danish commune. Set up by a professional couple in an upmarket district of Copenhagen, the dream life of collective living and togetherness is shattered by a love affair that puts the community to its greatest test.

Who’s in it? Trine Dyrholm, Ulrich Thomsen, Fares Fares, Julie Agnete Vang, Lars Ranthe, Helene Reingaard Neumann, Mads Reuther, Martha Sofie Wallstrøm Hansen, Magnus Millang, Anne Gry Henningsen

Born to be Blue

What’s it about? A ‘semi-factual’ biopic of legendary American jazz musician Chet Baker. The film reimagines his 1960s comeback from a career threatening assault. Starring the always excellent Ethan Hawke as the heroin addled trumpet player, the film – much in the same way as the recent Miles Davis biopic – playfully constructs a fictional narrative to tell Baker’s story. The film is released in cinemas and on DVD and Blu-ray this week.

Who’s in it? Ethan Hawke, Carmen Ejogo
