the fault in our stars

The Fault in Our Stars is an excellent emotional drama that shamelessly tugs at your heartstrings whilst delivering a funny, relevant and moving story. It’s rare to get a romantic drama that works on almost every count but The Fault in Our Stars is one of them.

22 jump street

22 Jump Street defies the odds yet again and is a truly brilliant popcorn movie. It’s a continuously hilarious and genuinely entertaining comedy that’s hard not to love. Coupled with Tatum and Hill on sparkling form and a story that’s well written and implemented, 22 Jump Street is outrageous, escapist fun.

8. Edge of Tomorrow ★★★★

With breathtaking effects, inventive use of time-travel and some cracking set-pieces across London and Paris that give these two iconic cities their moment in the sun, Edge of Tomorrow is a film with heart and style. Easily the best blockbuster of the year and a shining example that the traditional ‘summer blockbuster’ is far from dead.

7. Out of the Furnace ★★★★

out of the furnace

Out of the Furnace is superlative film-making with a fragility that’s rarely seen in mainstream cinema. With outstanding performances and a delicate, heart-wrenching story that leaves an indelible mark, Out of the Furnace is one of the finest dramas you’ll see in 2014.

6. Inside Llewyn Davis ★★★★

Lone Survivor is an engrossing and harrowing account of bravery and resolve in the face of insurmountable odds. Peter Berg and the cast should feel very proud of their work here because Lone Survivor easily sits as the best war film we’ve had for well over 20 years. This is simply unmissable film-making.
