The EE British Academy Film Awards have just been revealed in a star-studded ceremony in London.
The evening started off well with host Stephen Fry on fine form (although he did make a pretty harsh joke, poking fun at what one of the winners wore on the night). There was a kiss cam before the ceremony started that coupled up some interesting pairings including Leonardo DiCaprio and Maggie Smith, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Bryan Cranston and Rebel Wilson and Eddie Izzard. Rebel Wilson also stole the opening of the show with a brilliant and hilarious hosting segment that brought the house down.
Screen legend Sidney Poitier took the BAFTA Fellowship Award. Sadly, the iconic actor was too ill to attend the ceremony in person, but gave a heartfelt acceptance speech for his lifetime achievement award via video.
*Spoiler warning – If you are watching the delayed BBC broadcast of the awards ceremony, then please don’t read ahead!
It proved to be a popular night for The Revenant, a film which took 5 top awards, including Best Film, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Director for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Brie Larson won Best Actress for her stellar performance in Room while Kate Winslet picked by Best Supporting Actress and Mark Rylance Best Supporting Actor.
It was fantastic to see Brooklyn walk away with Outstanding British Film BAFTA Award and The Big Short take home the Best Adapted Screenplay. Carol, a big hopeful at this year’s awards went home empty handed, which surprised many.
Elsewhere, it was a big night for Mad Max: Fury Road, taking home 4 awards but crucially not Best Visual Effects, which eventually went to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. John Boyega also took home a Star Wars win in the form of the public voted EE Rising Star Award.
