Jay & Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie DVD review

When they can no longer stomach the ever growing weed of suburban crime, Jay (Mewes) & Silent Bob (Smith) take on the mantles of costumed avengers Bluntman and Chronic. They hit the streets and smash and take apart the super villains they have created. Can the doobage duo save their beloved Jersey burbs from their new arch enemies – The League Of Shitters? While clearly not the comic book movie the world wants, Super Groovy Cartoon Movie is the comic book movie the world needs.

Based on the original comics of Bluntman and Chronic, which were originally written by Kevin Smith as a companion to his movie Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back. Whilst Smith is on writing duties here, he leaves the directing to animator Steve Stark. By now you know what you are getting from Smith & Mewes and you are either a fan of their rude toilet humour or you hate every minute. This continues their styling’s of being rude and crude even though it’s a cartoon. It’s endless parade of fat jokes, knob gags and drug references show that they have no signs of letting up in that department. Most of the jokes land rather well and have some sort of topic comment to them – Man Of Steel gets a ribbing, as does Michael Bay.

However, the movie relies far too heavily on these one liners to create a fluid film that works for the characters. Instead it feels much like the cut segments you see in Family Guy each episode. The story starts strong as we are re-introduced to the characters but then it seems to wander around the super hero angle for far too long before it finds it’s foot hold on what it should be doing. The villains aren’t that funny after the initial introductions either, sure Cock knocker is a fun villain but the rest are pretty poor and loose ideas.

The animation is another cause for concern here. In Clerks: The Animated Series it took on a completely different style and it looks and worked very well. So it’s a shame to see the animation here revert back to a typical adult cartoon style with big eyes and massive gestures. It looks silly even for this movie.

Jay And Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie lacks any real feel of the previous Smith projects. Coming across as a slap-dash movie just thrown out there to appease fans. It would have worked better as a short series of 30 minute episodes. There is enough for fans of Smith & Mewes to enjoy throughout though.
