Blue Ruin Blu-ray review

When he learns that the man responsible for his parent’s death has been freed from jail, Dwight (Macon Blair – Murder Party) goes looking for revenge. Soon the situation gets out of hand and forces Dwight into a deadly confrontation – one with devastating repercussions for everyone involved.

Blue Ruin is a brilliant, emotional thriller with a dash of comedy that certainly grabs your attention from the start. It sets the scene perfectly and keeps you at the edge of your seat with an involving human interest story that features redemption, revenge and murder. Writer/Director Jeremy Saulnier does a stellar job in merging all of this into one of the best thrillers of the year, with the film already a huge hit on the festival circuit.

Blue Ruin

Macon Blair leads the line very well and hands in a sensational performance. From his vagrant start to the driven, revenge-seeking man he becomes, Blair completely captivates from start to finish. He handles the quirks of Dwight with just the right amount of humility, giving us the most unlikely anti-hero we’ve seen for some time. Devin Ratray lends some great support as one of Dwight’s old high-school friends whilst Amy Hargreaves impresses in a small but pivotal role as Dwight’s estranged sister.

The black comedy is certainly a high-point in the film. Using plausible and at times fallible comedy to its advantage, Blue Ruin hooks the audience through the natural humour of circumstance. Yes, this is a dark tale of murder and revenge but the comedy acts not as a softener, but rather a foundation for everything that happens. You’ll be surprised at just how much you’ll laugh at this movie given its subject matter and that’s a very hard skill to pull off.

Blue Ruin

Blue Ruin is a dark and involving tale that certainly holds your attention throughout. In Macon Blair the film has its biggest win, with a leading performance full of poise and calculated depth. But perhaps the most surprising element of enjoyment comes from the dark comedy peppered across the narrative –something that brings the drama home and keeps everything believable and sharp. Blue Ruin is a very competent thriller that has a lot going for it.
