Guillaume Campanacci Devils in Disguise interview

French-born Guillaume Campanacci has just launched an Indiegogo campaign for his new movie Devils In Disguise.

The talented artists has written, directed, produced and stars in the movie, which he is hoping to raise funds to complete. Guillaume has traveled the world as a model before turning to acting to truly express himself.

Over his career to date Guillame has worked with directors Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki (Gravity, The Tree of Life) and David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven), and acted with respected celebrities such as Jane Fonda, Eva Longoria and Barbara Palvin.

We caught up with Guillaume to find out more about Devils In Disguise, talk about the Indiegogo campaign, and discuss the challenge of juggling multiple roles for the movie.

Hi Guillaume. How are you? Where does this email Q&A find you?

Hi Pip, I am feeling very good, thank you. I am in West Hollywood right now after 2 years in New York City.

You’ve launchedĀ an Indiegogo campaign for your debut feature film Devils In Disguise. Tell us what itā€™s all about.

Devils in Disguise is a psychological drama, a very atypical movie. I’ve never seen anything like it before. It has difficult and dark themes, and a non-linear structure. I wanted to make people feel disoriented in time and space when they watch it.

You wrote and directed the film. Where did the inspiration come from?

Yes, I wanted to keep total creative control so I did a lot of different things on the shoot. For the low budget part I was inspired by Robert Rodriguez’s first film: El Mariachi, Darren Aronofsky’s first film: Pi, Christopher Nolan’s first film: Following, and Shane Carruth’s first film: Primer. I like the notion of Auteur where the director directs what he writes and has the final cut.

For the style of the movie I was inspired by the French New Wave, Godard, Truffaut, Hitchcock, Fincher, Resnais. Patricia Highsmith’s books about Mr Ripley helped me develop characters.

What would you say are the biggest challenges you faced when making the movie?

Finding money is always tricky but I was lucky enough to have people believing in me very early in the process. I can’t thank them enough because this adventure wouldn’t have been possible without them. Then I would say keeping my sanity during the shoot was a big challenge, but it’s normal I guess when you want to control everything.

Tell us about the casting process for the two lead actresses. How easy was it to find the perfect actresses for the roles?

I wrote the role of Leila for somebody else but then decided it didn’t make sense and I wanted to take another direction with it. I met Magen Mattox and immediately knew she was perfect for it. I didn’t even ask her to audition, I just knew. We then made several actresses audition but I couldn’t find the perfect Sandy. Magen thought a friend of hers, Montanna Leigh, would be a perfect fit. She sent me a tape and the trio of Devils in Disguise was formed.

You appear in the movie too. Was it difficult to juggle all of your roles?

Yes, I play Alain, the very abusive boyfriend. It was difficult at times because I had too many things to think about. I guess it resulted in a moodiness that fitted the atmosphere of the movie perfectly and when I was overwhelmed I could count on my actor Tad Brown to assist me.

Why did you decide to launch an Indiegogo campaign for the movie?

I decided to do a crowdfunding campaign to raise more funds and to raise more awereness about Devils in Disguise. I decided to go with Indiegogo because I liked the interface and their team has been extremely supportive! A big thank you to them.

The funds collected from Indiegogo will be used to complete and market the film, specifically: sound restoration, Film Festivals submission costs/travel/lodging, DCP (digital format to project the movie), promotionnal material, etc.

Why should people join in the campaign and help to fund Devils in Disguise?

First of all because it is my baby, it is everything for me…my first feature film!

Also compared to other crowdfunded projects, the film is shot, there is no risk that it won’t be on the big screen.

We have incredible perks like DVDs, posters by amazing Bosnian artist Alen Halj, a private concert by phone by Singer/Songwriter extraordinaire Britt Warner, and so many exciting other ones. And for $5 I will dream of you!

How will you be spending the holiday season this year?

I will stay in Hollywood for the Holiday season, working on my projects, far from my family. But I will see them this summer, them and the Mediterranean Sea…Oh I love you Mediterranean Sea.
