Elementary 5×20 The Art of Sleights and Deception preview

On the latest episode of Elementary, Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson (Lucy Liu) investigated the murder of a private investigator.

Since taking a beating from Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis), Sherlock had taken to sharpening up his self defence skills and fitness. He was also keeping himself busy with different female guests each night.

When the local crematorium opened up after the weekend they noticed something unusual. Someone had broken in and burnt a body. Worse still it looked like the person was alive when placed inside the retort. Sherlock and Watson were called to investigate. An analysis of the few remaining bone fragments revealed that there were actually two bodies in the retort.

Sherlock recognised a false tooth in the remains and realised he knew one of the victims. He described him as the worst private investigator he had ever met. Following up that lead revealed that the victims were Kirby, the private detective, and his assistant Fred.

At their offices they found many restraining orders from the families of people who were killed at a courthouse shooting. Watson followed up with one of the women who took out a restraining order. She discovered that Kirby had been trying to get the families to sell items belonging to the deceased. He wanted to sell them on as apparently there is a demand for items linked to famous killings.

Later the evidence led them to a man, called Carter, who had hired Kirby to try and locate his father. His step-father had been the courthouse shooter. At Carter’s house there was signs of a struggle and he was missing. The neighbours had heard a loud bang the night he disappeared.

Sherlock determined that a paperweight was the murder weapon. He also found out that Carter had CMT, a genetic condition that damages peripheral nerves. Further clues led them to determine that his brother, Jake, was a major league baseball player.

Sherlock proposed that Jake had killed Carter to stop the world finding out he was his brother. He didn’t want it to hurt his baseball career chances. Before Jake confessed his coach turned himself in for the murders.

No one believed the coach was telling the truth. Later Watson recovered the murder weapon from a skip and it had fingerprints from Jake on it. The noise the neighbours heard was him throwing it into the skip. Unable to argue the evidence he confessed.

Elsewhere in the episode, Sherlock discovered that Watson had registered them with a Private Investigator association. He wasn’t happy because almost anyone could simply register. Later he was able to force them to change their name and agree that members needed to pass an incredibly tough examination that he prepared.

The next episode is The Art of Sleights and Deception. Holmes and Watson get mixed up in murder and magic when they investigate the death of a magician killed while performing.
