In the latest episode of Conviction, the CIU team reviewed the case of Leo Scarlata. He’s a man with a low IQ and was convicted of setting fire to the family restaurant, killing one man and injuring another.
The case was assigned to Hayes (Hayley Atwell) by Wallace (Eddie Cahill). He also agrees for a film crew to follow their progress as part of a documentary about Leo.
While Hayes spoke to Leo, Tess (Emily Kinney) and Frankie (Manny Montana) set about investigating the restaurant and how the fire could have happened. After exploring all angles the case against Leo was dropped and he walked free.
Elsewhere in the episode, Maxine (Merrin Dungey) was seen to be attending an addicts meeting. She was struggling since witnessing the suicide last episode. Eventually she gave in and took one of the painkillers that she had been clear of.
Sam (Shawn Ashmore) was recorded saying bad things about Maxine. To try and prevent it from getting out his managed to take the files off the filmmaker’s laptop. The news still found its way to Maxine who wasn’t too happy.
At the end of the episode, Hayes found a DVD from the filmmakers on her desk. Watching it she found a clip of Wallace gushing with compliments for her.
The next episode of the season is Bad Deals. A member of Hayes’ team has a history with the latest case to be handed to the CIU, putting his place in the unit in doubt.
