One of the best things about C2C: Country to Country is that you always find a few surprises across the weekend.
The Main Stage acts, for the most part, you can make a judgement about before you see them but often as you wander around the festival and check out the various stages, you discover some talent you’d maybe not really noticed before.
Over the course of the weekend I saw plenty of acts that really (unexpectedly) blew me away so I’ve put together my Top 5 surprises of C2C 2017.
5. Jennifer Nettles
When it comes to Jennifer Nettles I’ve always been a little on the fence. I’ve never disliked her but I’ve also never rushed to put one of her albums on either. Following Jennifer’s performance on the Main Stage this weekend, I can’t get enough of her. She delivered such a powerful vocal and she was one of the most talked about performers of the weekend. Plus she’s absolutely lovely to boot.
4. Lucie Silvas
I’ve been a fan of Lucie’s since her 2000 debut single It’s Too Late. Last year she released her third studio album Letters to Ghosts in the UK, her first in almost a decade and the influence of her move to Nashville is evident. Despite being a little hoarse from performing across the weekend, Lucie’s Yamaha Music Stage performance was one of the best. I only wish I could sing the way she can and even on her worst day, she sings live better than 99.9% of other performers.
3. Cassadee Pope
Who knew that Cassadee Pope was such a vocal powerhouse? In just three short songs on the Yamaha Music Stage, Cassadee delivered the best vocals of the weekend and quite frankly she blew me away. She’s yet more proof that winning a reality show doesn’t make you less of an artist (she won The Voice in the US) and man the girl can sing. Chris Young warned us about her vocal prowess and he’s not wrong!
2. Drake White & the Big Fire
Drake White was pretty much this year’s Chris Stapleton. He was that performer that everyone had heard of but no one had any idea how amazing he was. Well after a handful of performances over the weekend, he’s definitely one of the most buzzed artists from C2C. Drake was stunning on the BBC Radio 2 Country Stage and his solo acoustic set on the Yamaha Music Stage was mighty fine. Drake sings from the soul and his voice gives you all of the feels.
1. Canaan Smith
I’ve always liked Canaan but he’s never bothered my favourite lists until now. I was in two minds whether or not to see him on the Late Night Stage on Friday but boy am I glad I did. I would say you’ve not experienced Canaan until you hear him live and his performance on Friday was so damn good that I returned on Saturday to see him again! With plenty of energy, lots of charisma and superb songs to back it all up, Canaan was a complete revelation. Roll on his date at Bush Hall next week.
C2C: Country to Country returns in 2018 from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th March 2018 at The O2 Arena in London.
