Blindspot 3×04 Gunplay Ricochet recap

In the latest episode of Blindspot, the team were tasked with stopping a deadly bomber who was terrorising Manhattan.

If you’re not up to date with Blindspot and like to avoid spoilers we suggest you don’t read any further.

The episode opened up in 1994 with some kids playing in the street. A man called Marcus Dunn walked past and got into a black van that was loaded with explosives. On the radio a news broadcast explained that the police had identified Dunn as the Penn-Tech bomber and were expecting an imminent attack. Dunn drove off and moments later an explosion ripped through the street.

Back in the present day, Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) and Jane (Jaimie Alexander) unpacked the last of their boxes from storage at their apartment. In the final box Weller found his and Jane’s wedding video and suggested that they watch it. Before they could, Jane confessed that Roman (Luke Mitchell) had contacted her the previous night and wanted to punish her. She said she was telling him to be open so nothing came between them again. Weller looked worried because he hadn’t told her that Roman had also contacted him for fear of her finding out what happened in Berlin.

At the FBI, Zapata (Audrey Esparza) spoke to Patterson (Ashley Johnson) who was still trying to solve the tattoo that Simon was obsessed with before his murder. She was still stuck for ideas on how to solve the final parts and Zapata tried to help. Meanwhile Reade (Rob Brown) updated Director Eleanor Hirst (Mary Stuart Masterson) on Roman contacting Jane.

Patterson solved a different tattoo that was related to the Penn-Tech bomber who was thought dead 20 years earlier. The tattoo pointed to a particular parking lot and identified a specific space. At the parking lot they found a van occupying the space, Weller volunteered to inspect the van in full bomb disposal kit. Inside the van he found a letter which Patterson said had been written just a week ago by Marcus Dunn. It was a letter to his daughter and the handwriting was a perfect match meaning Dunn was still alive.

Throughout the episode were snippets from Weller and Jane’s wedding video. It included messages for the couple from Reade and Zapata with Patterson. There was a message from Weller to Jane and vice versa. Finally there was a message from Hirst.

The team tracked down Dunn’s daughter and brought her in for questioning. She claimed her father was dead but a few threats of prison was enough for her to open up. She explained she didn’t have direct contact and used letters to communicate. She also revealed there was a particular bench at a kid’s playground that she was told to sit on if she was in trouble. The team headed there and realised it probably wasn’t a meeting spot so they spread out.

Jane spotted a man acting suspiciously and he pulled a gun on her. He asked why she was working with the cops and revealed he knew her as Remi. He took her inside his apartment and held a gun on her but she fought back and he was brought in. Patterson revealed he was named Rosamand “Rossi” Ott and was wanted around the world for helping people disappear. Weller and Jane interrogated him and he was surprised she didn’t remember him.

Zapata and Patterson didn’t find any clues at Rossi’s apartment. They had more luck in his car and found a hidden stash of cash, passports and a coded ledger. Patterson was able to work some of it out and found where the Penn-Tech bomber was hiding. When they got there local police claimed to have disarmed a crude bomb, as they went to move it Weller realised it was a decoy and ordered everyone out just before the main one exploded.

The team worked out that Dunn’s next target was a University and Patterson was able to pinpoint which one. There Zapata ended up fighting with Dunn who was then killed by Reade. Weller and Jane managed to defuse the bomb that head been planted by Dunn. Back at the FBI Rossi was to be extradited to France but he had escaped.

Elsewhere in the episode, Roman attended a charity auction under the stolen identity of Thomas Jakeman. After meeting Blake Crawford, the organiser, he snuck into the staff area and picked a door lock to access a restricted area. Later Roman bid in the auction to impress Blake. He placed a tracking device on the bracelet he bid on and gave it to Blake.

Later, Weller and Jane watched their wedding video. At the end was a message from Roman promising them more pain. At the FBI, Zapata text Reade to see if he was up for drinks but he replied that he was home already. She looked up from her phone and saw Reade leaving with Assistant Secretary of State West (Nicholas E. Calhoun).

At the end of the episode, Jane took delivery of documents from Rossi. It said she deserved to know, inside was a birth record that revealed Jane had a daughter 18 years ago.
