Blindspot 3×01 Back to the Grind recap

Blindspot returned to our screens last night for a third season. After a cryptic end to season two we couldn’t wait for answers.

If you’re not up to date with Blindspot and like to avoid spoilers we suggest you don’t read any further.

Thankfully the show wasted no time in answering questions about what happened between the end of last season and the mysterious flash forward. After taking down Sandstorm, Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) and Jane (Jaimie Alexander) got married and moved to Colorado to be close to Allie (Trieste Kelly Dunn) and the baby.

After setting up home and settling into routine things were good. Suddenly late one night the phone rang and it was Jake Keaton (Chad Donella) from the CIA. He told Jane they needed to get out and moments later the power was cut. Armed men stormed into the house but Weller and Jane were able to fight and kill them.

Keaton arrived with his team and explained that there was a $10 million bounty out for Jane on the Dark Web. The CIA weren’t able to trace the source so suggested she go into hiding. Weller insisted they go together so a plan was made for the following day. During the night a tearful Jane took off her wedding ring and left Weller to protect him.

After 18 months of trying to find Jane, Weller was back in New York to sell his apartment. He had an unexpected visit from FBI Director Eleanor Hirst (Mary Stuart Masterson). She had some worrying news, Reade (Rob Brown), Zapata (Audrey Esparza) and Patterson (Ashley Johnson) had all been taken in the night.

The only clue she had was left in Reade’s apartment. It was the strange metal box we saw in the flash forward at the end of season 2. No one was able to open it and their best guess was that it was an advanced biometric lock meant for Jane. On the back of the box were a tiny set of coordinates that translated to a location in Nepal. It’s where Jane was hiding out and the flash forward scene now made a lot more sense.

When Weller and Jane touched the box together it opened and revealed a strange trinket with the same bird inscription as the tattoo on Jane’s neck. Putting it near her neck activated a new layer of previously unknown bio-luminescent tattoos. Jane explained that months previously she had been in an accident and unconscious for days. She presumed this is when the new tattoos has been added.

They decided to start with the first tattoo they ever solved and found the text “Not causeless is this journey into the abyss” from Dante’s Inferno. Weller and Jane spoke to the FBI and sent them images of most of the new tattoo’s. It was revealed that Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) was now working with the FBI, he wanted full nude images to help.

The clue led them to Venice where Weller had proposed to Jane. There they found a case and a cell phone programmed with a single number. Calling the number revealed Roman (Luke Mitchell), Jane’s brother to be on the end of the line.

He was responsible for the new tattoo’s but before they could get to them, he wanted to help get the bounty off her head. In the case were two needles and a duffel bag. One needle would slow Jane’ heart down, the other would wake her back up, but only if administered within 90 minutes.

While talking to Roman, they realised he was also in Venice. A frantic search led to a confrontation and Jane gave chase. Roman escaped via speedboat but Weller managed to jump onto the front. After climbing aboard the pair fought but Roman got the upper hand and knocked Weller into the water. He escaped as Jane arrived with a boat to rescue Weller. Roman was gone but Weller had managed to steal his phone.

Weller didn’t want to take the risk with the needles but Jane injected herself and it was game on. Weller put Jane in the duffel bag, like he found her in season one, and went to the exchange. The buyer was running late and after inspecting her body and transferring the money he revealed he would have her cremated immediately. Weller had to stop him so a fight broke out and he injected Jane with the antidote. The pair were able to fight their way out and Jane was finally free of the bounty. They then set off to rescue their friends.

Meanwhile, Reade and Zapata woke up together in a cell in Venezuela. They were soon joined by Patterson. They had been sold as slaves and presented with a stolen safe. The first task for them was to open the safe which Patterson did. Inside was an encrypted CIA computer that their captor wanted Patterson to hack. She refused but was soon motivated when she was told she had 6 hours or her friends would be killed.

Instead Patterson came up with a plan that involved using magnesium from ready meals with the computer to create a giant flashbang. It worked and they were able to overpower their captors and flee. Outside they found themselves between a truck of soldiers and a tank. Fortunately it was Weller and Jane inside the tank, they destroyed the truck and they all made their escape.

Back at the FBI, Reade suggested a joint task force between the FBI and CIA to tackle Roman and the new tattoos. Everyone agreed and the team was back together. Zapata took Keaton to one side to mention something about one of the new tattoo’s that she hoped they wouldn’t discover. We also found out that Patterson and Rich Dotcom had been in contact, possibly romantically?

At the end of the episode, Weller and Jane headed off to his apartment and he gave her wedding ring back. When Weller stepped out to grab them some food, Jane concealed cash and passports behind an air vent. While Weller was out he was stopped by Roman who demanded help or he would tell Jane about what happened in Berlin.
